There were only a few moments in which his lecture was a bit dry, but overall he is truly a phenomenal professor. He is distinguished in his field and knows the material like the back of his hand. He also conducts thoughtful discussions in class, which has taught me so much. Attendance is mandatory, but he isn't a harsh grader. Definitely helpful!

Professor Hellbeck's course is not one you take for an easy A, and you will be required to do substantial work. That being said, he is still one of the best professors I've had at Rutgers. He is very well informed on his topic, and you learn a lot from his class. Offers a very unique perspective on Soviet history.

Dr. Hellbeck is a wonderful professor, His class on the Soviet Union was insightful and interesting. We had three papers, a blog entry on that days assigned reading, and an attendance/participation grade. Dr. Hellbeck gives detailed feedback on your essays. He is accessible during his office hours and he wants everyone to do well.

Professor Hellbeck was easily the best professor I had at Rutgers. He does have high expectations for all of his students, and he gives in return so much knowledge, assistance, and inspiration. He is extremely personable and is always eager to help. Great assigned readings (articles, textbooks), interesting films/media and assignments. 10/10

I took world war 2 in Europe with Prof Hellbeck, and it was amazing. Lots of insight, lectures are very interesting. There are no tests, only papers which are very simple and easy to write and get a good grade on.

I thought Professor Hellbeck was great! Yes, his papers required a lot of reading and careful thought. But I didn't think it was more work than any other class. He says you are graded on participation, but I didn't say one word in class and still got an "A" :)

He's a decent prof. But a tough grader. His questions are kind of difficult to understand sometimes. And I felt he should've elaborated the questions for the essays. In my opinion, sometimes it's not always the students fault and it could be the Professor's fault! This is something I think he needs to understand! Anyway still enjoyed his class!

What I don't understand is that he expected a perfect essay with the limited time he gave us. Unlike the midterm in which we had way over a week to work on this we barely had about 5 days. He wanted us to be patient and give him enough to time correct the papers but I don't see he couldn't give us more time to write a better essay. Double standard

Awesome professor. He grades very fairly (easily), as long as you do a fair amount of the reading you should be fine. Has a lot of really cool anecdotes about WWII which lets him connect to his students a lot more. Make sure you attend classes as it'll help a lot in your essays. They're very interesting anyway.

I really enjoyed his class. He gave us a very different perspective on WW2 by letting read diaries of many important writers. If I only had not taken 18 credits, I probably would have written better essays. But since I so many classes to focus on, I could'nt write the best essay i possibly could. i recommend students to take his class.

Professor Hellbeck is awesome! He presents the material in an extremely interesting way and he even takes you on a field trip (ok, only to the Zimmerli but still, it's something)! If you have a strong interest in the subject you will learn a lot. He is by far one of the best History proffesors I have had thus far at Rutgers.

Just show up and listen closely. If u don't pay attention get ready to read A LOT. Otherwise just listen and/or take notes. Just study for exams (few terms, put a source in context, and an essay). 2 Exams plus 2 essays. Not that hard just try to address all the issues. He is a bit unclear at times but just ask and he is willing to help.

Make sure you are able to attend EVERY class. He email response is dismal (emailed him 3 times to finally get a response that said "Well I hope you can get your Spring Break money back because I will not give you a make up exam." He is well spoken but expects you to be able to read around 60 pages for each class. So be very careful when you register
