He is a good and a nice prof overall, who has good material but he expects you to be as passionate about any given subject as he is. If he does not see that whatever you do, it will not be enough. Have written a bunch of papers for him where I put lots of effort in never got more than a 74.

Very nice and passionate professor. Hard marker for students coming right out of high school, but he gives you lots of comments on how to improve your writing. Class is mandatory as there are mainly just pictures on his slides, and expects you to know a lot for the midterms and final.

Comment:

Spectacular, brilliant prof who is more passionate about his subject than any other I have encountered. Even if you aren't interested in social history, you will learn a lot from his class about how to approach historiography. Challenging course but extremely rewarding to all history students who put in the effort. Textbook is made for the course.

Comment:

Professor Walsh really knows his stuff and his enthusiasm for history is contagious. Sometimes he can seem slightly pretentious, but he's really a nice guy who desires to see his students exceed. He has high expectations but taking HIST2304 has taught me so much about writing and research. Can't believe it but... I now love Canadian history!

He can be a great proff but it's true that at times he acts as though his field is more important than others. Is friendly and aproachable on good days, but at times can be rude and conceited. Lectures vary from being extremely interesting one day to boring and useless the next. A hit-and-miss proff.

Prof Walsh was the best teacher I have ever had in my education life. Without his mentoring and assistance with assignments I would not have a clue what the university standards were. I had him in both my first and second year and did very well in both courses. He is an engaging speaker and class is always fun.

John Walsh is an amazing professor. The lectures are great and funny, the assignments, though numerous, are challenging but force you to view historical research at several angles. I have never met a prof more organized or willing to aid students in anyway possible. Very passionate about his subject. I can't say enough good things about this prof.

Completely regret taking the class. Readings challenge your ability to stay awake. Acts like his field is so above everything else, but does so like a snob. Absolutely brutal marker. Always takes up full-time of the class. Asks for way too damn much: 3 exams,5 page article analysis,2 pages paper proposal, 10 page final paper, 2 weekly postings.

Best Prof I have ever had. Passionate about the subject he teaches, enjoys lecturing, very helpful with in-class exam preparation. Go to class, read the text, work hard, be open-minded and you will certainly see history in new and interesting ways. Thoroughly loved the course.

I had Walsh for my first year Canadian history, and made sure to take his second-year class, too. Assignements took some time, but if you put in the effort he recognizes it and you do well. Class is actually FUN - he is great at lectures. Important to note: readings are essential to doing remotely well in the class!!

Didn't expect to enjoy the subject-matter but lectures were fun, assignments hard but useful. Walsh demands a lot but he gave a lot too.You do have to come to class to get the benefit of his assignment explanations. He's not into spoon-feeding.

1 in 4 will always have something bad to say about a Prof, but I am not one of them. He wasn't only very helpful to me, but so was his TA I was under. Extremely knowledgeable and brilliant. Highly encourage ANY of his courses.

Comment:

Excellent professor! He does a great job of making even the most dull material interesting. I learned more in this class than any other class I've taken. Walsh is a highly knowledgeable prof who is clearly enthusiastic about what he's teaching. My only warning is that he expects a lot of his students and his assignments can often be very tedious.

I think he is an awful professor. He doesn't help his students, he passes them off to the TA's, who are just as bad as him. He quotes himself in lecture, doesn't properly explain what he wants and is just awful in getneral. I will NEVER EVER take a John Walsh class again and I highly discourage everyone of taking it.

I have two words to describe this man, in the words of a friend of mine: pompous ****. He is an awful person. He turns what should be an amazing class and an amazing topic into a completely incomprehensible and exhausting class. Save yourself the trouble and try something else. You'll be greatful you did!

a truly amazing professor. his students are a priority and he actually has a passion for teaching. lectures are relevant and interesting and his sense of humor is a welcome refuge from what could have possibly been a very dull class. his feedback and suggestions are very helpful, especially if you make the effort to see him before hand.
