Great professor. Some labs are difficult, but if you listen to his lecture, you will be able to do well on it. Also, if you need any help, he will be able to guide you. If you do all the assignments, you should be able to do the tests as well.

Joe is one of the best CIS professor I've taken as a CS major student at De Anza. Clear lectures, clear instructions. His labs can be challenging for some, but to be honest, all his tests comes from there, so you basically are given a huge heads up. Besides, he's accessible out of class so do ask if you need help. Super approchable

You get out what you put in. He will make you work for your knowledge, but Joe is always there to help. Joe is truly a great instructor and one of a kind at De Anza. Hit the ground running and don't stop.

Truly one of the best professors at De Anza. You will learn alot from him, and he is very knowledgeable. All the people who say that he is hard need to put the work in. You will not get an A by just doing the bare minimum. You have to work, and will get a good grade if you do. His class is very high-quality, and you will learn a lot!

I've taken pretty much every CS class for every programming language at De Anza. Mr. Bentley is hands down the best CS professor at De Anza. His teaching style is amazing, hes always accessible outside of class and will respond extremely quickly to emails. He will make you work for the A but when you do it is well worth the work. Take him.

rambles a lot and makes jokes about divorce almost constantly. outside of that, it's difficult to understand his lectures and even more so his emails. isn't fast with responses and half of the emails i got where i asked for help i got one line which equated to "fix it" or some cryptic riddle. felt i was getting a side quest from a wizard than help

Absolutely amazing professor! He is very knowledgeable about the subject, and taking him will guarantee you a solid foundation in C++. His assignments are the best way to learn and he gives very good feedback. I would also recommend showing up to his class early for an extra opportunity to learn and ask questions.

STRONGLY recommend this instructor. He loves what he does. I stopped coding for a while and I needed to brush up on my C++. I remembered he had a website with his assignments on them. I decided to try to do them and when I got stuck he'd help me. It was during summer break ,class was not in session, and he was still willing to help. TAKE HIS CLASS.

With 3 other classes & a part-time job, I'm glad I'm taking this as P/NP. Since I'm learning C++ as my first language, this class is no joke. I've easily spend over 15+ hours on each of the 6 hw assignments + extra credit assignment. Notes are okay; they're dense so Google would be a clearer reference. He's nice, so def ask for help whenever stuck!

He's really tough, but I learned a lot. Working on his assignments is like trying to build a car in 5 days, so spread it all out. He'll respond to emails right away in case you're stuck. I don't recommend taking his class if you have no experience in C++. -Sincerely, A person who's going to pass on his 3rd attempt.

He is a really good professor, but if you are new to programming, had a bad 22a teacher, your taking other hard classes, or you have work then I don't recommend.

His assignments are the best way to learn. You can go to his lectures and take notes, but most of the learning comes from his 3-5 hour assignments. Ten of them assigned once a week throughout the quarter really teach you concepts well. A lot of time is required to test and understand the concepts of the assignments, but you'll learn better this way

Very knowledgeable and teaches well. Most of the assignments are doable without (much) help. The issue is even if your code works, he'll take off points if there is some "bad practice" in your code (he'll warn about the most common ones ahead of time), so be careful. Mid/Final aren't that bad, just study. B+ only because I slacked off.

I learned a lot. He helps you develop a solid foundation for c++ programming. Midterm and final are not harder than assignments. Many example codes are available on the class webpage. Grades clearly. He is also available at noon in the CIS Lab. His voice may not be refreshing, so be careful when students correct his very few insignificant mistakes.

I took him during winter 2016 quarter so idk how much he's changed but from what I recall his lectures and notes are very informative and you'll gain a ton of knowledge from taking his class, but his assignments were tough as hell and took hours to perfect. His exam and final were also hard as hell but it's possible to ace them with studying lots.

Great professor to have, especially before 22C. Instills good programming habits, gives great insight and explains every line of code from an engineering standpoint. Make sure you go to lecture otherwise his examples and lecture notes won't be as useful.

I had previous programming experience before taking this class, and I still learnt so much. You have to pay a lot of attention to small details when you do the assignments, because he'll take of a point or two for formatting errors. He'll answer emails within a few hours if you get stumped on anything.
