Incredible professor! Incredible class! Loved having the opportunity to take a class with Block. It is incredibly an incredibly dense class and at times, lectures and readings are hard to get through. However, if you stay on top of the subjects and pay attention you'll learn a lot.

I agree with the other comments here. Essays are definitely pretty hard to get a solid A on, but as long as you're thorough with your answers you should do fine. A big part of your grade also comes from attendance and the final, so as long as you put in reasonable effort you'll do fine.

Block's lectures are non-mandatory but you DEFINITELY want to turn up, because this man is not only a snappy dresser but he genuinely does his best to make the already engaging course material interesting. This class really is graded by a few things, since 60% of your grade is distributed evenly across 3 essays. Essays are tough but graded fairly.

Lectures alternate between fascinating, mind-numbingly dense, and both at the same time. He knows a breathtaking amount about his field, and has written a lot of influential papers in it. That being said, his explanations and assigned readings are not always very clear.

Block is the type of professor who makes being on a college campus so invigorating. Although some of the material is complex (esp. for an intro class), Block does his best to allow for questions/discussion during lectures. He is easily at the top of his field and absolutely worth taking. Also... as other noted he has an amazing sense of style.

The only assignments for class were the weekly readings (which admittedly sucked), and three 3-5 page papers. Plus a final. Such an easy class and it was extremely interesting.

Professor Block is the nicest guy. He's incredibly passionate about consciousness and is always asking students what they are not understanding, so he can work with them until they get it. Gives you all sides of the debate (though not shy of course about where he stands). Lots of reading, but assignments are just reading comprehension questions.

took his class "minds and machines" when he visited harvard. fantastic. led me not only to study philosophy but to try to pursue it professionally. only gripe is that he didn't accept harvard's offer...
