I usually love history but this class was AWFUL. He was super slow at grading work and it was two months into the semester before he even gave us a syllabus. He was also extremely inflexible and unhelpful when approaching him outside of class. Lectures are overloaded with information and hard to follow. He is also rude and petty towards the class.

THE WORST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD! I love history but hated his class. Warning, he is extremely sexist so definitely stay away if you are a woman.

TOO much reading! Pointless powerpoints to view. Very confusing SPICE "discussion" which is actually a 5pg essay if you want at least a B. Critical thinking essay that is at least 3 pgs and most often both are due as well as two to three, 20 question quizzes in 30 minutes each week. SLOW (3+ weeks) to grade. Feedback vague and very condescending.

Awful. Every week there are 2 quizzes over 2 separate chapters and 2 critical reading essays about those chapters. The questions were multiple-in-one and so I wrote a lot of pages for this class. He's slow to grade and extremely critical when grading. The essays had a one-page min but usually, they were 2+ pages bc the questions we multifaceted.

Quizzes every class so skipping class will really affect your grade. He's not very approachable or nice and wants students to participate but is kind of condescending when you do participate. Tests are super hard and are super hard to study for.

You have to read after every class and there's a quiz EVERY CLASS. The information on the quizzes may or may not come from the reading. He goes off topic but expects you to know everything for the test. Doesn't go into detail for test materials but goes into specific details for the test. Grades extremely hard and if you ask questions he belittles

It is hard class. you have to work really hard to take an A, and you have to read a lot. His exams are really tough. But he is very understandable and he is there for you if you need him.

Worst class I ever took. I've learned my lesson w/ online courses. The directions were so vague and then he would get upset w/ the class if we didn't do something "up to his standards" when we didn't even know what they were. His comments were unhelpful and condescending. Put in incorrect grades for my friend and was rude when she asked about it.

I would not take him again. Does not answer questions when asked in class. Does not reply to emails in a timely manner, if he does at all. I was a junior taking his class and it made me want to drop the course he was so awful. Definitely find any teacher besides him.

There are quizzes based on textbook readings each class. Quizzes account for 50% of your grade, and exams (3 of them) account for the other 50%. Tests are hard because they cover a wide-range of information. Long and boring lectures. Can't have anything on your desk unless you're taking notes or a drink. Little hope of passing without the textbook.

Not going to lie, he is a tough professor. But I swear by this, if you honestly just do what he says, go to class, read, turn everything in, and genuinely just talk to him if you ever get confused, you'll pass.

This class is draining the life out of me. I end up reading and answering questions for 2-4 hours before every class. He gives quizzes on the i-clicker every single day from the readings. These account for 40% of your grade which I think is unacceptable. This means 40% of my grade is based on WHAT I TEACH MYSELF?! WTF.

Do not take him or his class. It's supposed to be a common curriculum class, but this will drain your gpa. If you have better options take someone else. He is very unhelpful and close minded. I never felt comfortable in class or enough to talk to him as a student. He is very difficult on papers. I'm a fairly decent writer and received awful grades.

RUN FAR, FAR AWAY! This is the worst teacher at Loyola! He exepects students to dedicate way too much time outside of class on his subject (forgetting that we have like 6 other classes). Quizzes and tests are impossible no matter how hard you study and pay attention. Ruthless. I thought priests were supposed to be nice!

this class is taught on a graduate level, def. not undergrad. he is disorganized, never returns work, poorly prepares students for exams and seems to hate students. i'm not sure how this man is a teacher. its almost like he messes with us trying to see how hard he can make it. i am an A student that has never struggled like this in a class before.

Such a ridiculously difficult teacher. Quizzes everyday that require you to read 50+ pages a night and 150 slide powerpoints. After reading both he still only quizzes you on unimportant details. I didn't learn much in this class and was constantly frustrated. Got the lowest grade I've received in college in this course.

Father Gerlach is really, really tough. This is not a class for the light-hearted. I really struggled due to the amount of work and rhe difficulty of tests. But I learned a lot.

Don't take him if you want an easy A. If you are genuinely interested in the subject and are willing to put forth the extra effort, by all means take him. Great professor.

I took him for World War I during the summer. Father Gerlich really knows his subject and made it really interesting. He was always willing to answer any questions. He provided a ton of information via Blackboard that was helpful for preparing for the final. His demeanor can be really intimidating but I learned so much in his class.
