Dr. Griswold is a very good professor, old school. Doesn't allow technology in class, but that helps you focus since his essay exams are based on his lectures. Attendance is mandatory. However, all grading is done by the GA. Do not take Austin Schoenkopf, grades way too hard, given it is a gened class and can be pretty rude towards the students.

His exams are in essay format, but he gives a study guide that is on Canvas (he also posts the PowerPoints from lecture on there). There are also reading responses every week, and he has a strict no-technology policy. HOWEVER, the TA that you have will make or break your experience in this class. Take Leroy Myers if you can!

Learned lots during this class. Take notes at every lecture and you will do fine. 3 essay-exams and 2 papers are the bulk of the class, plus a few little assignments in the discussion section. Leroy Meyers was a great GA discussion leader, would recommend.

Best lecturer in my four years of college. You more than likely won't interact with him one-on-one because it is a massive class. You definitely get out what you put in with this class. + No textbook yay!!!

The lectures given were interesting with lots of videos and he answers questions the class has, DO NOT be on your phone. Seriously. Pro tip: the best way to pass this class easily is having a good GA- I'd highly recommend John Baucom, he is super nice and grades lightly, you will love him.

Professor Griswold is an amazing lecturer that effectively covers the course materials succinctly. Be ready to read, we did over 1,000 pages of materials in our semester... Most grades come from exams and the occasional op quiz over one of the many readings

Dr. Griswold is very particular about his lectures. He doesn't allow phones or laptops and will tell you to put them away if he sees them even though its a large class. If you have a good TA you can get an A in this class. The exams are essays based on big topics of that unit. We read 2 books and they weren't terrible. I would take him again

Dr. Griswold is a really great prof. His lectures were sometimes excessive so he had to rush a bit, and I liked Dr. Sheldon's (pre civil war) lecture handouts better, but overall, he had some great stories to tell, because he's lived a lot of the history we talk about. Tests are fairly easy if you study (essay tests) and the readings are not bad.

Cool guy who really knows his stuff. Write down what he says about the power-points, not just the slides. Get to know your discussion leader and be nice to him/her; he/she grades your papers and tests.

This is a hard class, even as someone who always enjoyed history. You need to go to lectures and discussions or your grade will suffer. Be friends with your TA; they do ALL the grading in this class and are more likely to help you out if you participate in class. If you can't write quickly, you will probably fail; tests are 2 essays in 50 minutes.

History has never clicked with me, but Dr. Griswold made it click! His lectures are fast-paced and you have to write down almost everything he says. He uploads his lectures but they are only slides with general points that he elaborates on in class, so you have to pay attention. He's very passionate about history and teaching.

Really interesting, engaging professor. Course is focused on American experience of WWII and the lead up to the Cold War. Weekly reading is required, as he will give pop quizzes and it shows up on the final. Must take your own notes in lecture, w/o computer.

All essay tests graded by your TA; His lectures are very long, monotonous and boring. Attendance is taken, and if you miss more than 3 classes, your grade gets knocked. He's a funny guy, has a good personality when he shows it. No textbook, but novels are assigned and discussed in your discussion section for credit, so make sure you read!!!!!

My advisor suggested this class as an easy gen ed while I focused on harder classes for my major. Personally I hate history and found it obnoxious that I had to stress about this class at all. If you're not a history major I highly suggest taking this course at your nearest community college.

He was very strict in lecture and DOES NOT allow technology. That was by far the hardest part of the class because he moves really fast. Be prepared to write a lot. The tests are all essay you have to be very prepared. I had a great TA which was the reason I did well. Overall he was challenging but I would recommend him.

AWESOME professor. Gave interesting lectures and you can tell he really loves this stuff. Midterms are essay format which is great because you don't have to memorize a ton of facts (he gives you study questions that are exactly like the test). Definitely recommend.
