Comment:
All quizzes and tests are open book, open note, open internet but most become google fests or are based on obscure comments from lecture. Difficult to learn from and even harder to get help from on homework assignments.

Comment:
Stan speaks in riddles. He is condescending and will deliberately insult your intelligence. He will define concepts with words you don't understand and when you ask him what the new definition means he will repeat the old one. He is very frustrating and stubborn. You don't know your grade during the semester and when asked he says "don't blow it".

The class is just a bunch of presentations by the EE faculty, and the all of the quizzes including the final are based off the presentations which you have to attend all the because he takes attendance every Tuesday and Thursday. Also if you want to know your grade you have to talk to him personally, he doesn't use the online grade book

The whole class did nothing to teach me about the major. He mainly sat there and had guest speakers talk about things. The tests were unnecessarily difficult for the class. We were tested on names of faculty we had never met. It was open notes and mainly just a test of how fast you could google. When asked for help, he said to do better on tests.

E1 is a difficult class. Dr. Burns is very helpful if you go talk to him. Make sure you keep everything you do in the class for the final and quizzes. The quizzes will turn into google scavenger hunts...

I can't say that Stan is a great teacher but I will not complain about him either. The material can be complicated but he gives you many opportunities to succeed. Assignments due every Wednesday and open notes quizzes with a partner every Wednesday.

Doesn't stay consistent with notation during class, use book. Goes down rows to call on people, expect to be called on. Weekly homework assignments followed by a quiz on that material. Final is very easy if kept all previous materials.

Class consisted of presentations from EE faculty and industry professionals. Exams were very technical and on nothing that was learned in class. Attendance is mandatory otherwise points will be lost. I do not recommend him.

Knows his stuff. has weekly quizzes(which are partnered) are almost identical to homework's. Almost always in his office for questions, and is willing to walk you through. Overall learned a lot. Read the books and pay attention. And the dude buys the class erberts and gerberts for the final! Awesome Prof.

Tests on things he doesn't teach. Teaches random facts and not methods or understanding of electronics. Is often unavailable outside of class. Does not thoroughly answer students' questions.

His tests wouldn't be very hard if they had almost anything to do with what was actually covered in class. More specifically when in class presentations cover one specific topic, the test questions will cover ideas related to that topic, but not mentioned in class, so if you know some general info about it your in luck otherwise your screwed.

This was a pretty easy class but it was extremely difficult to stay awake for most presentations, especially at 8am. Burns has been my least favorite teacher at UMD this far. Also, his tests are typically NOT related to anything that you actually learn in class.

Easy class, anyone who had trouble passing the intro to ece class doesnt belong in college at all. Not the most interesting of classes, but tests are easy and based off of guest speakers and some lectures, tests are open laptop with no internet, which means you download the powerpoints presented and fidn your answers during the test, not hard,

This was one of the hardest classes I took. He did not make things easy but related everything to real world applications. The stuff I used in this course made E2, Semi-conductors,...every other class, much easier. Taking an easy professor in ECE will do more harm then good. Not only will you not learn anything, you will do worse in later courses.

The introductory class was O.K. for an intro class. I think the class should have been more hands on but whatever. The tests were pretty much completely random and slightly pointless. I suppose they are to see if you were paying attention to the presenters. You really aren't going to learn much but you will get an idea if ECE is the major for you.

His tests are unbelievably difficult. Only reason I got an A was because his tests are partner tests and my partner was a genius. Tests are completely irrelevent to material presented in class. Boring teacher as well.

His tests are comparable to playing Trivial Pursuit when juxtaposed with what was actually presented in the class. Not such a bad guy, not such a good teacher.
