Comment:
He is not bad. He grades harshly but will curve as long as you show that you know what you're doing on most of the problems. His teaching style is not like most other math professors, so you may have to adjust.

Professor Shaska manages to be unhelpful and rude even in the face of a global emergency. Avoid this professor unless you want to know how "easy" and "trivial" the questions you have are.

Comment:
Tony Shaska is my least favorite professor of all time. I am not a perfect student, but I had a 3.8 average in Math up until his Calc course. I failed this course because the teacher provided no feedback in grading (only pass/fail on each question). Shaska also favors female students, answering their questions before exams while ignoring males.

Comment:
Shaska likes to say how easy everything is and comes across as having a big ego. He cares about students but has very high expectations. He makes the homework and tests completely different from what he teaches, but curves tests for the highest score to be 100. Be prepared to teach yourself, but you should go to class.

Comment:
Shaska's #1 goal is to make Shaska look smart (students learning is happy coincidence), but he's not even good at that. Lectures come to a halt when he realizes he made a mistake 6 steps ago in the proof. Misrepresents the materials on the exams. Asking a question quip about how "a high-schooler could do this". Pass by virtue of his absurd curve

Extremely rude if you ask questions. Sent out an email after the first exam telling everyone to rethink their majors if they got under a 30%. I got a 13% on my first exam and was ranked 20 of 50 in the class. The highest grade was a 66%. I dropped and re-took Calculus 2 at OCC which was much easier.

He definitely gets a bad rap. He is a tough grader, covers very tough topics and its not always easy to grasp it all. However, he is definitely knowledgeable, not just about the topics but the implementation of the topics covered in real world practice. He is a huge cryptography buff and loves to bring it up. He will curve heavily at the end.

Spent a month going over basic logic then gave us a midterm with questions pulled from a putnam exam practice book. Barely teaches, just expects you to have knowledge a Math PhD would have. Lies about the material that will be on exams. Incredibly smart and helpful outside of class, but in class is a disaster. Most difficult exams I've ever taken.

By far the worst professor I've ever encountered at Oakland University in the years I've been here. Go through the homework thoroughly and attempt to ask questions about it, even though he likely won't answer them. Don't skip. Being at lectures will help you at home when you have to teach yourself everything.

Do you enjoy professors who don't give partial credit? Does the thought of studying for a week straight only to get a 20% on an exam excite you? Do you want to become a part of a community of students who gather after exams to panic about how nobody understood a single question? Then Tony is the man for you!

The WORST professor i've ever experienced at OU in 4 years! Prepare to be disappointed if you ask a question, because it will probably be ignored. I was hoping that his attitude was a "scare tactic" for the 1st week of class, but nope, he is just that way. If you take this professor, be prepared to teach yourself everything!! Good luck!

terrible professor sent out email after the first test telling whole class to give up on their engineering major if they got below a 30%. The irony of his email was over half the class got less than a 30% on the first test. Very tough grader literally gave multiple zeros to students. exams are very hard. Makes fun of students if they ask question

Dr Shaska is a very knowledgable mathematician with high expectations for students. This was the toughest math course I've ever taken and the tests are long/challenging but the problems do come right out of the book. The final exam consisted of problems that were directly pulled from the review sheet he handed out. Very tough but fair and caring.

He knows his stuff. He is a very tough grader when it comes to tests, I highly advise not to skip class. Homework is tough, but if you turn it in you will get full credit for trying. STUDY HARD for the tests. Problems come right out of the book, No calculator allowed, know calc 1, trig, & algebra well

Obviously very smart, but can sometimes be rude and very inaccessible outside of class hours. Skips material in class, and won't help when asked for help on problems students have not yet been equipped to answer.

This professor talks a lot of talk, but does not walk the walk. He does not offer help to students, even in class going over problems, is blatently rude to students in class, does not give any partial credit. To pass the class, he give a massive curve. Reasonable at lecturing this class, but follows his notes barely and has been teaching for awhile

Dr. Shaska is one of a kind, he truly has a gift with teaching and being able to explain math well. His lectures are easy to follow and comprehend and he always provides great examples that help in mastering the material. He incorporates real world examples and also has a great sense of humor. Take Dr. Shaska for any level math course!!!

In my opinion he was the clearest lecturer I had at OU, I took him for three separate math courses and got at least a 3.7 each time. The trick isn't to be a math genius, go to every class, don't worry too much about the first exam grade and ask for help on the concepts you're struggling with. He passes anyone that asks for help.
