I had him for African Civilization and he was a great teacher! He comes across a little odd but he is a very nice guy and he knows his information! Definitely one of my favorite classes.

Comment:

I do not understand why people who complain about world history being about Africa are even talking. He teaches African Civilization, and I think he does so in a very unique way. Instead of learning dates and wars and people, he takes you in depth into the culture itself so you can understand the texts as if you were a part of the culture.

Comment:

This teacher is helpful if you ask questions but will not just give you the answers. In lecture he gives you page numbers for what he's talking about and he only talked about Lamidi for one of the FOUR units so those complaining about that need to think about the whole semester. He's nice but sometimes a little unclear, just ask him to be specific.

If I hear about Lamidi Fakeye one more time...grr. Not what I was expecting out of a "World History" class. If you to take "History of a Nigerian Woodcarver" I suggest this class.

i took him for world history and i learned about was africa!!!! his extra credit is wack!!! it can hurt your grade some how! i would not take a class with him again!!!! Lectures are long and boring, if you read the book u might be fine but his tests are confusing!

I hated this class and this Professor. He teaches out of 3 books... but it's one main book (Shillington) that he NEVERS lectures or talks abouts, but you are tested on this material. Class is boring. I WAS excited to try the class, I found to me that he didn't provide any historical relevance to the African civilization. Don't take him!

Dr. Haight is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about his field. I was surprised to read that people felt that his classes were not historically-based enough. Of the many works we read, nearly all were historical. He will take the time to talk to you anytime about class related material--or just to give advice. Overall, inspiring class.

This class was actaully alot of fun. I am not a history person at all, but he made history fun with extra credit games, and class discussions. The novels that we read give you some insight into the culture rather than focusing on specific dates, and battles, which I perfered. If you study for the tests and keep up with reading its easy!

The class offers little in terms of African history ... Instead the professor (inexplicably) teaches 3 fictional novels that don't seem to have a whole lot to do with African history or culture. Overall I felt as though I wasn't getting much out of my time. Seriously consider if you actually want to take this course with Dr. Haight.

I had Dr. Haight for three different courses at Western. Two African history classes and my methods course for history education. I have been teaching for a while now and still use some of the stuff from his class. He is great teacher,unlike most college professors. He made me more prepared to teach than any of my education courses!

I really enjoyed Dr. Haights class. It wasn't the most exciting subject but he does a really good job in lecture. He is unlike most professors becuase the class formate is not power point, he gets students involved and its clear he has a true passion for Africa. Do your work and you'll be fine.
