Professor Capper is a fantastic professor, and one of the most inspirational I've had at BU so far. He really knows his stuff! There's quite a bit of reading for this class, but none of it is too difficult, and he always clarifies it for you during lecture. Lecture is really just him talking to you, so if you're not an auditory learner, beware!

Here's how the History of American Thought works: Read Professor Capper's source book; hear great lectures that clarify and expand on the readings; analyze and synthesize the readings and lectures in papers; the effort will enrich the rest of your thinking life. Professor Capper is kind, super-knowledgable, and a fair grader. Amazing class.

Not particularly a class I was interested in, but Prof Capper managed to make it one of my favorites - A manageable bit of reading that, with his help, became much clearer. Definitely recommend the class - it was a relaxed atmosphere, and he genuinely seemed interested in fostering an open discussion while not being intimidating.

Excellent course. Extremely interesting survey of intellectual thought in the 20th Century. A diverse selection. Prof. Capper is extremely knowledgeable and he presents the material in a clear and effective way. He is open to questions and discussions after class. There is a significant amount of reading, but if you do it you'll be fine grade wise.

Professor Capper is quite kind, bright, and highly capable of breathing life into American history and intellectual theory. His class was an eye opener and, although difficult, was very fun and often casual. Professor Capper crafted a vision of the 20th Century, especially the first 30 years, that was modern and relatable to our own troubled times.

Professor Capper was very clear and helpful. Readings for class were a little too dense for me at times, but lectures always clarified the material. Tests were long but fair and Prof. Capper made them easy and straight forward to prepare for. Overall I learned a lot from this class and would take another class from Capper.

A class that has stayed with me and continued to heavily influence the way I view American history. Professor is brilliant, extremely clear in explaining the concepts, he proceeds with a regularity and logic that is extraordinary, you never feel lost in his class. He is also an extremely fair grader, and if you do the work and stay engaged, you win

This professor took a lot of my interest in history and made it boring. He took the fun out of the class and the workload was heavy. Didnt really like the teacher and had better professors at B.U.

Capper is a nice guy and very knowledgable. The workload is heavy, and the reading is tedious but avoidable if you just go to class. He's fair but his class is tough.

I'm genuinely surprised by the yellow smiley face here. I guess I'm a part of a silent majority of students who have terrible mornings in this class. The reading and subject matter has a shot on its own but the monotonous lectures are something awful. Least favorite class at BU so far. Sigh...

This professor was great. He's really nice and helpful. Some of the material is hard to understand, but he seems to take that into account with grading. He's more of an English type than history, which was good for me.

Readings were over my head sometimes, but he does a good job explaining them in class. smart guy if you don't go to class, then you HAVE to understand the readings. doesn't lower grades b/c of lack of participation, rather highers grades. work load ok
