Comment:
I am taking Western Civilization I online and my professor is David Harbin. This is the most difficult course I have taken at JWCC. However, that makes a good grade much more rewarding. I am learning a ton, but it consumes a significant amount of my time to read the material and make sure I am answering questions correctly. Worth it!

This class was so boring. He knows his information but it's boring. 2 test my semester and he gives nothing to help you. There are about 3-4 assignments due every week.

David Harbin is one of my absolute favorite teachers at JWCC! His lectures were always so interesting. He has such a plethora of knowledge. You have to try on the homework, and be sure to prep at least a little for quizzes. Try and you will succeed.

He was AWESOME! He should be at Yale or Harvard! Somewhere where the ivy grows thick and the students care! How he ended up here I have no idea....I am just thankful he did!

What one should expect from a college course. If you expect to be spoon fed the material, and not required to do any thinking on your own, DO NOT TAKE HARBIN! Tough, but fair. I found him to, literally, bend over backwards to help students.

It is rare and refreshing to have a teacher who is so passionate about their subject. Professor Harbin is extremely clear, helpful, and encourages class discussion. Easy tests, but hefty amount of homework.

Makes a valiant attempt to keep classroom engaging, however subject matter is a little dense. Knows his stuff, but sometimes comes off a little snide when students provide commentary.

Passion for teaching is obvious; enthusiasm for History apparent. Effort to engage students constantly. Class was hard, but things of worth should not be easily won. Students need to realize that they are not in Kansas anymore. Plenty of EC!

Students who feel that this teacher is "horrid" do not belong in college, much less as teachers themseleves. Harbin is tough, but fair and attempts to link History to the present to make it meaningful. He has high expectations, and does not suffer fools lightly!! By the way, does not teach history 111 - that is world history!!

I went in to this class not knowing what to expect: I had heard he was hard and that he "liked to hear himself talk." However, I found myself challenged and the effort he made to relate history to the present grabbed me: he talks becuase no one else does. Fair and balanced.

Fair and open-mnded. Does not tolerate excuses (or stupidity). Likes debate - esp. from those who have different opinions than him. The kid who said he was a fascist does not know what he is talking about. Probably failed.

Students who say that he is not clear, helpful, or easy are living in a fantasy world. He provides help outside of class; extra credit out the wazoo; allows students to make up quizzes, hand in work late w/o penalty: he tends to talk a lot, but, in his defense, the students do not.

Lots of homework. Essays, textbook questions, 10 current American history essay (suck bad). would not recommend. asks too much for survey course. Likes to hear himself talk.

This class was pretty interesting and easy. Mr. Harbin seemed to focus on the minorities and small events in history rather than the bigger picture, which is kind of cool. Students have to read a lot, but the writing assignments seemed to be focus on student opinion. Write your opinion, get a good grade. Awesome!
