Comment:

Had Chen for Discrete and Computer systems. Very hard to understand. Sticks closely to material in the book while skipping some sections. Lectures is almost a re-read of book. Homework can be tough. Allows a full page of notes on midterms and finals. Seems to bump your grade up if you show up. I scored a B but was given an A.

scoring an A is easy as long as you read the text practice problems and go over the test reviews that he gives thoroughly. there is definitely a language barrier but hey you are not going to be working with all fluent English speaking folks once you enter the real world especially in technology related fields. so this is a good exposure that way.

Comment:

Took for Numerical Methods (have had for other classes previously). Grading was easy enough to slide through without truly learning the material. Exams were straight from the review and notes were allowed. You might not learn a lot, but this is a core class and a good way to get the credit if you do the homework and make good exam notes.

Sometimes hard to understand but really funny if you get to know him. I've taken three of his classes and would take more if I had the oppurtunity. He always gives a good review for the test and lets you take notes with. Take good notes and do your homework and its an easy A.

Had for Numerical Methods, Discrete Math, Linear Algebra, & Computer Systems. Test review is important, & similar to tests. Tests are average difficulty, but he grades too hard. One small mistake, and you will lose alot of points. No notes were allowed for Numerical methods (which made it really hard), 1 page for other classes. Not recommended.

Hard class though grading is fair. Dr Chen does present a language barrier but you'll get beyond that quickly. Wouldn't hesitate to take again if necessary.

I've taken 18 hours of CS courses from Dr.Chen. Focused lectures and tests are based off of homework so are not bad if you keep up with the class. Very approachable during office hours, just don't bother him right before or after class. Nice guy but quiet
