All around great teacher, able to adhere to both those who know the most and those who know the least. Wish I could audit the class just to sit and hear him lecture, find his style and breadth of knowledge fascinating. Always has some obscure but memorable story to back up a topic which makes the class both engaging and super informative

Extremely smart and knowledgable about his courses. Professor Richter is very easy to get to know. Highly recommend going to office hours and engaging in interesting discussion. Very fair grader but will make you work hard for an A. If you do the readings you will be happy you took this class.

Really, really solid professor. Extremely understanding. He'll take the time of day to work with you. He knows everything about what he teaches and clearly cares. Take 171, 232, 258, or anything else with him. Most remarkable is his ability to objectively evaluate ideology. Do the reading, you'll need it.

Make sure you do the reading, because it's important and he tends to check. However, I can't be effusive enough in my praise. Always available outside class, knows his stuff, really nice, and usually makes it interesting. He'll talk about the material with you for an hour, wandering off into whatever topic you please, if you drop by. Jim is A+

Richter is a great professor. His lectures can get long, but they are logical, flow well, and outline main ideas from the various readings. He makes himself available for essay help and general inquiries, which is especially nice since sometimes his essay questions are unclear. Definitely an intelligent man, you just have to get used to him.

Great professor - extremely helpful outside of class and tries hard to make the class very discussion-based. He likes assigning a lot of reading and papers but if you take notes and listen to him it's a piece of cake.

Cold War class- BIGGEST MISTAKE one would EVER make! Never take his class as a freshman! Hes hard, VERY unhelpful, cold, doesnt give a damn about you or your paper. Hard grader. Literally just hands the topics for papers and thats it. Has an ego problem. would NEVER recommend him. His class hurt my gpa and didnt increase my knowledge abt the topic.

Overall a good professor and an EXTREMELY intelligent man. Has both a sense of humor and creativity. The class is not as easy as I assumed it would be, seen as how it is 100-level.

Richter is by far the worst PS guy to do your thesis with. Avoid like the plague. PS 171 is pretty good though for a freshman intro. liked him then, certainly don't like him now. He's vague and harsh at the same time.
