Comment:

Dr. Sturm was one of the most unorganized professors I have ever met. During class, she would often brag about all of her accomplishments as an SLP and it got old real quick. She isn't the best and explaining class material and goes off on tangents a ton. Make sure you get the book to help you prepare for exams. Good luck!

Comment:

Janet is one of the most intelligent professors I have ever met. She is amazing in her field but is so intelligent what she says may go over your head. She is a tough grader and this definitely won't be an easy A but your degree shouldn't be easy. This profession requires you to work hard and she would do you a disservice not to challenge you.

Comment:

Usually not one to write reviews but I was so inspired by Sturm's lack of teaching that I felt like I had to warn future students. Sturm goes off on random tangents about her personal life, and I feel like I know more about her daughters than CDO. Taught myself every topic because she was so hard to learn from. Not organized enough to be a prof!

Comment:

She never answers emails, she's never available for office hours that SHE SCHEDULES, class time was her talking about all the wonderful things she's done for the profession. She is an amazing SLP, but by far one of the worst, most unorganized professor I have ever had. Also don't ever go to her to question a grade, she'll end up taking off more pts

Going to Dr. Sturm's class is pointless because all she does is brag about herself and her "mentor Nikki Nelson." I did homework for other classes in her class and taught myself all of the material from the book when it came to exam time. Never answers her emails, never in her office during her office hours. Not impressed.

Janet is one of the worst professors I've ever had. Although she is very enthusiastic about her class, she is not able to teach students. her class consisted of her bragging about herself and her children. She doesn't understand that not everybody wants to work in schools with special needs kids. I honestly didn't learn anything in this class.

Janet Sturm is the WORST professor I have ever had at CMU. She is not accessible outside of class, she brags about herself more than she teaches, and is the hardest grader ever. Going to her office hours is almost impossible and when you go she just belittles you. No clue how she still has a job here considering she doesn't teach. AVOID IF YOU CAN!

I love Dr. Sturm! I was unsure of her at first as she isn't your "typical" professor, but she is one of my favorites ever. You can learn so much from her to use as an SLP, seriously, listen to her!! She does not spoon feed you information but gives study guides more than a week out & will meet for sessions to study. Go to class and ask questions!

Dr. Sturm is an AMAZING person. She is so enthusiastic and passionate about speech pathology and it truly makes the class more enjoyable. You are only graded on a few projects and two exams, so there aren't many points in the class. Exam study guides are pretty lengthy but she is always willing to meet as a group to go over any questions!

Sturm gets a bad wrap. She's a caring teacher who takes time out of her busy schedule for study sessions before exams. Her powerpoints are dense, so read the book! She has tons of great info and is very passionate, so content is often over your head. But she is willing to slow down and answer questions! The project is hard, but go to office hours.

Dr. Sturm is the most unorganized professor I've ever had. She never answers emails, and waits til the week before finals to put any grades in. I went to her office hours once to ask questions about a project, and she didn't answer a single question and kept telling me how she wasn't prepared to talk about the project. Exams are very hard

Janet had a lecture about how we need to be accepting of other students who are non-english learners & accommodate for them. Two weeks later, my friend in the class who is from another country told me Janet would not accommodate the Final Exam for her as english is her second language.I told my friend to report this. This is terrible

Dr. Sturm is a wonderful individual and im sure is really good at what she does SLP wise. As a professor though, she is all over the place. She takes 20mins to get through one slide because she gets too wrapped up in bragging about herself and her SLP career. There are few opportunities to get points in this class as-well & the exams are ver hard.

Really loves what she teaches and the kids she works with. You can tell she is quite educated and knows a lot about her field. Does talk a lot about her own curriculum and how much she has done, and is a tough grader. Overall interesting class but really hard.

Comment:

Dr. Sturm has a higher level of expectation of students than some of the other profs that teach undergrad CDO, but it's because she is so passionate about the children she works with. She really wants her students to become advocates for the students they will one day serve. Study hard and raise your hand, you can learn a lot from her.

Comment:

Will blame the students for getting things wrong, will never say she did something wrong. Constantly tells students to "email and remind her" about important things that need to happen in the class. Get ready for her tangents and stories that sometimes help, but are mainly stories of her bragging how great she is.

Janet goes on and on about her skills during class rather than attempting to teach her students how to develop those skills. After an exam she lets you look them over and write notes for anything you think needs correcting and then she never looks at them again. She doesn't respond to emails and isn't in her office during office hours.

The WORST professor Ive ever had. Read the textbook, dont listen to her lectures. In class she said something incorrect, I studied this, and got it wrong on the exam. The textbook blows but its more correct than she is. Doesnt grade until the end of the semester. Changed my exam grades multiple times, lowering them when she wanted. Awful.

Dr. Sturm has the potential to be a great professor but is never organized enough to do so. She's experienced, brilliant, and has done many impressive things however doesn't have the means to teach others how to do these things. Doesn't grades assignments til the end of the semester, due dates change on the daily, and doesn't respond to emails.

Comment:

Janet cares more about herself than her students. She doesn't grade anything, puts her responsibility on GA's, isn't specific about projects, and tells you to just "talk to her through email/office hours" that she doesn't respond of go to, All with a giggle and a smile on her face. I know way too much about her and not enough about CDO.
