Worst class Ive ever taken. Dont take him if you dont need to. I had him for Calc 1 and I have no idea what Im doing in Calc 2. AVOID

Comment:

Professor Schiffman is an extremely smart man. His lectures are heavy and he moves at a fast pace. He uses notes that he emails that he wrote at least more than 10 years ago. The notes are barely legible and it is extremely hard to learn from him. He knows what he is talking about but does not know how to teach it properly. Avoid if you can.

Comment:

really like him as a person, just the worst as a teacher. very excited about math, which is only good for the like minded. Lectures are HEAVY, you will likely need to learn most of the later material on your own. Assigns group projects (ended up being 45 pages of work for me alone) but very very vague with due dates and groups, suggest avoiding.

Comment:

He is very passionate towards pre calc but he cannot teach very well. He goes over the proofs of equations, however doesn't do any problems in class leaving you to figure the important part on your own. The tests, quizes and group projects (yes group projects) are full of problems he never touched on or discussed in class.

Please do not take this professor unless you are a math genius. He is a really nice guy and is very intelligent but he just can't teach. He uses handwritten notes from the 70's and just can't explain math to a class full of students who don't really understand it.

Professor Schiffman is a Mathematical genius. He will take the time to explain anything in great detail if you ask. Easily one of the best math teachers Ive had.

He lectures for the entire time and leaves no room for questions. He always starts class three minutes early for some reason and waits till the period is over to give the quiz out. He almost brags about how old his notes are which he teaches from. If I didnt take AP calc in high school (which I passed with a B+) then Id be failing miserably.

I wouldn't recommend taking this professor unless you really know what you're doing when it comes to math. His lectures are LONG (He starts 5 minutes before class starts, and don't expect to ever get let out even a minute early), and they can really put you to sleep. He is extremely knowledgeable, but that often makes things hard to understand.

Every class is a lecture, where we look at his poorly-handwritten notes from 30 years ago while he drones on incomprehensibly. Never opened book. Two group projects. Lots of quizzes, but he only takes your best ten quizzes. Two-part midterm and a take-home final, formula sheet allowed on midterm. Expect to teach yourself most of the time.

Class is nonstop from beginning to end with no chance to ask questions or pause for understanding. He never uses the textbook and instead relies on 20 year old handwritten notes that he emails as attachments to students. Individually he explains lessons well (when he's not asleep during office hours), but lecture is extremely difficult to follow.

Comment:

Prof Schiffman is a very nice person, however, if you don't already know calc don't take. I am someone who needs examples to learn, I cannot just learn by someone talking to me about something for an hour straight. He is very hard to understand and you will have to teach yourself everything that you are supposed to know. I would not recommend.

Professor Schiffman is one of the best college professors I have ever had. I have never had a professor care so much about students and be such a fair grader. The only complaint I have is that he starts class like 5 minutes early and hold students longer some classes.

Prof Schiffman knows math. Inside and out! He LOVES math and it shows. He can calculate in his head up to something like 14 digits. It's incredible. I asked a lot of questions and told a lot of math jokes which made him laugh. He reminded me of the professor on Futurama. He's a nice man that cares if you put in the effort. I got a 108.7 for a grade

Extremely nice professor, answers any questions you have in class or at office hours. Amazing for people who love math, as he really knows what he's talking about. Has you print out notes so you can focus on the lecture rather than copying stuff, and tests are very straightforward and have SO many extra credit opportunities. Would take again.

I didn't enjoy having him sometimes but at the end of the semester, I really appreciated him. He allowed us extra time to finish our final, even on Saturday if we needed it. If you ask him for help, he will ALWAYS help. He's a nice man but the material is just sometimes hard to grasp. Weekly quizzes based on learned material. Prepare to use Proofs

ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE do not take whatsoever. He is extremely hard to understand and especially hard to follow. If you ask a question he completely ignores what you just asked. Im mid through the semester and have learned absolutely everything. He is a genius but he talks the whole class as if they were a mathematician. do not take.

Comment:

A wickedly smart professor. He has extensive notes that he hands out (be sure to follow along closely) and he works through many examples. Clear and to the point. Can move very quick, so pay attention. If you get lost ASK him, he will answer you. Like math? Take him. If not, don't. Personally loved him, I would definitely take again.

Lectures are endless. He comes to class to do math and the students are more like background noise. He starts 15 mins early and ends 10 mins late. He looks like a skinny version of the old guy from UP. Sounds like the parrot from Aladdin. If you miss class from a snow day he will never stop complaining. His notes are old enough to go to the bar.

Calc 1 and Discrete Math Ok this guy is rain man on speed. He talks very fast and if you're really not paying attention you're going to miss a lot. What he does do though is give a lot of handouts of notes he's made from years ago that actually help a lot. So even if you can't understand him from the start you can learn it yourself

Always started class early and ended late. he printed out all his notes for you. Gives 14 quizzes, takes the best 10. His quizzes are only 2 questions but he takes points off if its not word for word how he wants it even if you got the right answer. Overall, he's not bad, just annoying at times
