Comment:
He seems stuck in the early days of Amherst. Hes not up to date on school policies, and will (accidentally?) use hurtful words to enforce antiquated views. Ask other professors to make sure you are being treated fairly. Dont assume his statements are accurate, and find ways to push back if you have reasons to believe something is not right.

Comment:
Prof. Himmelstein is a great professor! He seems a little jaded with the whole Amherst, prestigious education kind of deal, but it makes classes very entertaining. Class is very discussion based, so get ready to participate. Office hours are helpful and fun. Highly recommend taking a class with him!

I had a mental health problem the semester I took Drugs and Society and he was very kind and understanding about it. Fair grader in my experience, maybe a little tough.

Comment:
Do NOT take a course from Professor Himmelstein. He is the EPITOME of old school academia. Close-minded, stubborn, only interested in his perspective. HE ACTIVELY SHUTS DOWN CRITICAL THINKING. He is not interested in your feminist/postcolonial/postmodern perspectives. He's friendly, but his opinions are dangerously out of date.

Comment:
Slightly dry course because you can get lost in his long speeches, but he has an impressive wealth of knowledge on the subject. Something I didn't like was that most of the grading was based on only 3 large papers, which didn't seem like the most comprehensive assessment of a semester's work. He is organized and offers helpful resources to students

Jerry is actually so awesome. He knows so much about the course, Drugs In History, and he's really passionate about the material. He really grows on you and you'll love him by the end. Lectures are interesting and clear although the course is discussion based. He never calls on anyone without their hands being up. He's a tough grader though.

Not a good prof. Relies a lot on discussion but terrible at facilitating it. Material is really interesting though.

Interesting guy, relies a lot on class discussion which is nice IMO. Moderatly difficult grader with a lot of reading assigned but overall I would recommend a class with him.
