SOC 168 could be a lot easier but Turner has been teaching it for so long that he's very specific. The TAs grade super specifically too. You can't just BS your answers because they look for a particular answer. You HAVE to read. If you don't, you're not going to pass. I read almost everything (there's A LOT) and I barely passed. Comment:

All the low reviews are non-majors who decided a sociology class would be easy and decided to skip the reading. It discouraged me from taking him as a professor but I really enjoyed it. He's very knowledgeable about sociology. Uses flow charts and diagrams to illustrate some things that are more difficult to understand. Must do readings!

Professor Turner has been by far one of the best professors I have had at UCR. He is very knowledgeable about the topics. Get ready to read and take many notes. His exams are not easy.. And they are back to back. No time to breathe. But it was all worth it. Tought me a lot.

Professor Turner is very nice and extremely knowledgable about the subject. He doesn't post his slides so you have to take notes. He wrote the textbook so he posts it online. You can also purchase it very cheaply. You have to study and read the book if you want an A. He is a bit dry and mumbles a little so sit close to the front in lecture.

Really easy professor! Just read his textbook and study that book over and over again and you will do fine! You don't have to go to lecture, but I enjoyed going to class. The test are really easy if YOU READ THE BOOK!

Mumbles often and his material is straight from his textbook. I barely went to lecture and passed with an A because I studied his textbook, which is actually rather well-written and understandable. He's a highly cited sociologist and knows his stuff, so meet with him during office hours.

I wish I had listened when people told me not to take his class! I studied my BUTT off, read every scrap of the book and still only managed to get a C! The tests are SO hard that it's almost impossible to pass, the class average was a D all term! Avoid this class at all costs! It ruined my GPA!

His tests are very hard and tricky and he talks in a low montone voice. The grades are only based on three midterms and a final. He's self proclaimed to be very left of center. Good thing he's retiring from Soc 1 after this quarter.

I THOUGHT HIS LECTURES WERE SO DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND AND THE TESTS WERE EVEN HARDER. HE WOULD TRY TO HELP IN O.H. BUT STILL, THE MAGNITUDE OF INFORMATION IN AN INTRO CLASS THAT HE PROVIDES IS ASTOUNDING! AND THE PRICE OF THE BOOK WAS OUTRAGEOUS 90$ FOR A PAPERBACK!

he's a funny guy, a bit ****ed in his jokes at time but hilarious. his lectures mirror the book because he wrote it. read the book and know your vocab and your set. i went to class only 3 times and did well. READ THE BOOK if you don't want to g to lecture. this guy knows what he's talking about.

this guy is such an egotistical **** ****. this guy deserves to have his teaching license stripped from him. just b/c he wasn't treated nicely in life, doesn't mean he has to take it out on his students by purposefully giving his students hard tricky exams for such an ez subject. he makes exams so that the class avg ends up being a C-/D+.

The reason why everyone is complaining below about the SOC 1 class is DAMNED SIMPLE: They didn't pay attention, they did not TRY to ABSORB the material. READING THE BOOK is one thing, LEARNING is another. This professor knows what he is doing; sit and listen to his lecture carefully; HE MOST ANSWERS OUT FOR THE EXAMS. I got an A-. Awesome teacher.

Very interesting person, and having him w/ a smaller class would be great, but the class is just huge, he doesn't really have a choice but to do straight lecture, can get boring, but wait for him to start talking about his own life, that's interesting. Very hard tests, only take this if you're willing to do a lot of meticulous reading.

AVOID THIS CLASS!! I took it in hopes of using at as a class to pad my GPA..was I wrong. He expects you to memorize the entire book (like you dont have other classes). RUN!!
