Comment:
In Creative Writing, there was obviously a lot of writing. But throughout the semester we were able to give and receive feedback about a variety of our work. You definitely need to be in class because it is very difficult to get all the feedback you need in order to succeed without it. Overall, Professor Barron is really nice and wants to help you.

I had Prof. Barron for an upper-level English course. She expects discussion participation and can be a tough paper grader, but she's a great teacher! Discussion and novels were very interesting! Reading was a bit heavy. One thing I didn't like was that she never put grades online

Dr. Barron was not a great professor by any means. She expects this class to be your number one priority, and if it is not, she will call you out on it. Several times in class I was singled out and embarrassed about the quality of my writing. The environment she creates in class is not a helpful one, but is rather toxic. She sucks the fun out of CW

Not the best but far from the worst. Much more involved than a lot of other professors that I've had- it never feels like she is slacking off. Your mileage may vary; do the work and you should be fine, especially if you enjoy writing.

Dr. Barron was the worst professor I ever had at Truman. She will single you out and embarrass you in front of your classmates when you miss. She will also make you feel pretty dumb when you don't do your readings due to circumstances beyond your control. I don't know how I managed this grade, but it may be from fear. She is a dictator.

She will assign a ton of writing and twice as much reading. She will jump down your throat if you are five minutes late to class, especially if it's more than once. She expects your 100%, but she gives back 110%. She gives a lot of individual attention to your work and is both harshly critical and encouraging. If you want to be a writer, take her.

I took my senior seminar with Dr. Barron and would not have taken anyone else. She's a harsh critic, a tough grader, and at times downright scary. But I'm a better writer because of her. She's the best Truman has, but you have to be willing to give her your all - to give your work your all. Take her if you want to be a real writer.

Comment:
Dr. Barron is TOUGH. In the end, my writing improved, and I'm thankful for that, but I will NEVER take her again. She's very condescending, and remarks on my papers were unhelpful and oftentimes rude. If you work unblelievably hard and she sees that then you will be okay. An A is possible - you just might go crazy trying to get it.

I hated this class. She wasn't very helpful with making your writing better. Said she helped but all she did was give you vague helping points.

Dr. Barron was a strange professor. At times she was very helpful, while at others she could be so frustratingly unclear and even condescending. She is a strong personality, which some might not like. If you can get past this, you'll find that she is very passionate about her subject and a good teacher. It was challenging, but my writing improved.

Creative writing seemed like a good idea at the time, until Monica Barron! I forced myself to go to class with an eye infection and couldn't even open my eye! The "Baroness" definitely notices attendance, and will make remarks about it in front of the whole class. She turned me off to writing in because it was all about what SHE wanted! No freedom!

I can see why some people don't like her, she is very open with her ideas and very liberal. But once I got to know her, she became a great mentor and was always available to talk to about the class and my papers. If you can live with her open-mindedness and want a challenging class, take her.

Dr. Barron definitely expects a lot out of her students. She is a great teacher, very passionate about what she does. If you are looking for an easy class, I would look elsewhere. If you are looking to be pushed to do your best, Barron is the way to go.

Comment:
This class was horrible. She was passionate about what she taught, but for a required writing class, I'm not sure that shoving global warming down our throats the entire semester is quite necessary. Good grades are hard to come by when she doesn't make the requirements for papers known until after you turn them in... not good.

This class was mostly a workshop, so her involvement was limited. Monica gave some interesting feedback on work, but it was hard to tell what your standing in the class was. She didn't really take charge when the discussion got off topic or out of hand, and we often went over class time, which was frustrating. Overall, I'vae had better teachers.

Monica is abrasive. I dropped her class after two days and one meeting, for which I made an appointment that she ignored in favor of some pet who dropped by.

Took for Creative Writing. Might seem cold at first (or the whole semester...) but means no harm. Jump in and participate and she'll appreciate it/you. Vague with assignment expectations initially, but clarifies for revisions. If she can tell you give your best you will do well. Discussion oriented. If you cry when critiqued, don't take. Fun class.
