Nancy is fantastic! She cares so much about the subject she's teaching. Expect to read a lot! There are a lot of books she wants to get through. In-class participation is expected. She's very into group discussions and being active and creative. Follow directions carefully, especially with the lit reviews and final project. Very moving readings!

Nancy knows her stuff. She is passionate, and I have never learned so much in a class. If you are up for a challenge, take her. She is amazing. We read 7 books, and there was a fair bit of writing. There is a final art project/paper at the end which is fun. All that being said, Nancy could make a gang leader cry. She's a tough cookie.

Nancy is very passionate and really nice, but she can be passive aggressive. She hates when people are late to class or don't show up, so be VERY careful about that. Reading and writing are heavy in this class. Reading a whole book in one or two days isn't uncommon and writing a paper on each isn't uncommon either.

Comment:
For the most part, Nancy is an amazing professor, and a very caring person. Sometimes, however, she is unnecessarily harsh. She is unforgiving for absences, tardies and misunderstandings. It can be all or nothing for her. Tread carefully and you'll have a great experience. Especially with the final project!

Nancy is eager to share about her subject field, which makes class engaging most of the time. but her attitude towards some students can the atmosphere somewhat unpleasant. Avoid being too critical of any of the course materials.

Nancy's class was interesting. I learned a lot, but I also witnessed her make other students wildly uncomfortable over small things and even brought one to tears for being tardy. Don't get on her bad side if you are an English major, or you are going to have a terrible time. It is an easy A though if you keep up with the reading and work.

Nancy is one of my favorite professors at Western. She genuinely loves children's and young adult literature and it shows when she's lecturing. You HAVE to go to class, and you MUST be on time. She will ask you to come in and sit down quickly, which some people take the wrong way. In the end, be respectful and do your reading and papers.

Nancy is truly a gem. She left such a big influence on me that I this is the second class I took taught by her! Go to class every day and do all the readings and homework. There's not a lot of homework and you just have to write four short papers on the readings. The only downside for this class is you read a lot in a short period of time.

Nancy is so passionate about what she teaches. She has you read about a book and write a short paper every 1-1.5 weeks. We do fun projects mostly all in class that let you explore your artistic side (which you pass if you put effort into). Class discussion everyday is nice because we talk about what we want. She reads a book to us and it's grand.

Nancy is one of the best professors whom I've had. She consistently challenges your writing (and thinking ability). Of course the assignments are challenging -- this is college! I'd be worried if every paper that I submitted didn't have critiques. If you're an English major, I highly recommend any of her courses.

Unclear expectations, ridiculously long and convoluted instructions that are impossible to follow. Plays "guess what's in my head" i.e. you'll have no clue what is expected of you until after you spend an extreme amount of time on assignments and she decides it's not what she is looking for. Good luck.

I enjoyed the class, but I thought the readings were kind of rushed. You watch the movie version of the books you read! Read the books because you have to take quizzes based on the readings. There is no final for this class. You just have to a make a trailer based on a book that you get assigned to. Overall I thought this was an enjoyable class.

Beware that if you miss class or come in literally one minute late you will be scolded. She does not have any mercy about missing her class for ANY reason at all. The books assigned in class very interesting and the class isn't too horrible. Just be aware that you cannot miss a day. Pop quizzes and more worksheets than given in middle school.

Nancy is very passionate about her subject, unfortunately she is very inconsiderate about the mental and physical health of her students and I wouldn't be surprised if she keeps pig carcasses in the trunk of her car because she is just flat out MEAN.

Nancy is wonderful & very passionate about YA Lit. A big component in her lit classes is transmediation, so we often responded to a book read aloud by using art tactics. It was a refreshing breather when I am used to having to write 10 page essays for every class. It's easy enough to pass the class, but you get what you put into it. Def recommend!

Comment:
Let's be clear: Nancy Johnson is very passionate about YA Literature. This doesn't excuse being condescending and disrespectful to her students, wasting upwards of a half-hour talking about her YA convention, or literally cribbing the final from a seventh grader then getting snotty when people didn't take it seriously. I wanted to like this class.

If you are unprepared, Nancy's style may make you feel like you actually ARE in middle school again. We started every class coloring with crayons, trying to capture the "essence" of the books she read aloud to us. The big projects were all low quality art. She's nice, but her class is a joke. If you are looking for a rigorous ENG class, avoid.

Nancy is very passionate about Young Adult Lit and an excellent professor. She incorporates a lot of artwork into her curriculum, which I wasn't a fan of-- but the assignments were very easy and the books were incredible.

Very VERY passionate about YAlit. As long as you keep up with the reading (a new book every week) you'll do perfectly fine in the class. Don't be absent though, you miss so much. The book she chose are intriguing and assignments were just one page reflections. No midterm :)

Awesome class. An effective professor. However, guilt-trips you for being absent (even if you talk to her about it), and takes everything very personally. She seems to have a problem understanding that students have a life besides class, and sometimes other obligations! Very detail-oriented grader. Just be diligent though, and it's a great class.
