Dr. Devine is a hidden gem. He truly understands the pressures college life visits upon his students. Hes engaging in class, but to truly experience Dr. Devines genius you need but walk the campus with him. What a rush.

Hes a nice guys and he means well. BA from Yale and PhD from UC Berkley so he's brilliant but good luck understand his lectures. Repeats entire lectures aka you don't have to go to class everyday. If you're not a fan of teeth gritting and random babbling then stay away. Thinks all PC students are prude, and "the students at brown" need to "coddled"

Whatever you do for your 200-level philosophy credit and for any philosophy course in general, for the sake of your own sanity and GPA, do no take this professor. His lectures are indecipherable and he thinks he is a great philosopher himself, and he never gives back grades so you have no idea how you're doing until its too late. Run from this guy.

Dr. Devine is one of the weirdest professors I've ever had. His lectures are all over the place and you never know what is going on or what the topic is. Besides that, he is surprisingly quite an easy grader on essays and the midterm in final. Although the class was uncomfortable and boring to sit through, it wasn't too tough.

Such an easy class. He repeated the information almost everyday that you needed to know for the mid term, final and two essays. Pop quizzes were once each week. At the end of class, he would sum up what that nights reading was about, then the next day, the quiz was on his one sentence summary. Super easy, didn't even open the book.

One of the worst experiences of my life. Im not big on philosophy to start but his class was absolutely awful. Hes one of the weirdest guys ive ever met and throughout the entire class everyone is waiting to leave. His random pop quizzes make you go and sit through an awful 45 minute lecture. do not take devine...ever

He is a horrible teacher. He is so difficult to understand and he talks in circles. He discusses things that are so unrelated to the material that you tend to forget what class you are in. He is probably the most disorganized person I have ever met. There are so many good philosophy teacher AVOID HIM!

Devine's a bit nutty but he's pretty funny. Likes to make sexual references whenever possible when lecturing or in discussions. I took him for philosophy of religion and got an A- there's a decent amount of reading and a quiz just about every day but overall he's worth taking

WORST teacher I have ever had. He makes sexual references all class it is gross. He is unorganized and he gives 10 random pop quizzes that are difficult so you have to read & understand what the reading said and actually come to every class. He is an easy essay grader but his tests are hard. I would never take his class.

His class is very uninteresting and not well organized. He once threatened to submit a student to kinky sexual torture for trying to look at another's grade.

Devine is definitely off his rocker but he is very lenient and his papers and exams are not hard at all. He loves to make sexual references in class and is an extremely awkward guy but if you laugh at it and don't get offended easily, class will be very interesting. If you're looking for an easy PHL here it is

I do not understand all the bashing of Devine on here. The guy is awkward, but the kind of awkward that is hilarious. I would take the class because it is easy and is one class that you can just breeze through if you want but can also learn the stuff and make it your major or concentration.

One of the worst teachers I've ever had. Completely turned me off to philosophy. His lectures were muddled and confusing and his quizzes were arbitrary and usually about irrelevant aspects of the previous nights reading. I would not recommend him at all.

Devine could be considered crazy. That being said, he is not a bad teacher and it is definitely possible to get an A. Go to class and read the textbook. you can read the summary before the actual reading and you'll know enough to pass his easy 5 min quizes.

I think that deep down he is smart and a good guy, but somewhere between his mind and his mouth he becomes awkward, incoherent, and blustered. His tests aren't hard if you have any profinity for philosophy, and quizzes can help carry you.

Comment:
This guy is awful. He's way too open about his conservative views to be teaching a class on morality. He is offensive and doesn't care. His lectures are awful, they are all over the place and he talks way too fast. He grades really hard. He's an all around bad professor and a bad guy. Nothing makes sense and nothing seems to have a point.
