Comment:
Professor Juan Campo is opinionated and dogmatic in his approach to teaching; he doesn't welcome alternative perspectives and ideas. The subjective portion of exams is harshly graded if you do not regurgitate his opinions. If you don't toe the line, your grade will suffer, and you will receive lower marks, so be warned.

Dr. Campo is such a nice person. He genuinely cares that you succeed in the course. While there were many interesting lectures, I do feel that some details were not very relevant or important and had too much time allocated to them. It might not be the most exciting course I have taken, but I do think that it was interesting/ and an easy A.

This class is a good for a low stress GE. There's a good amount of reading but if you keep up you should be fine. The midterm and final are easy enough and there's one 8 page paper. I'd recommend going to lecture.

I took 2 classes with Campo, 140C and 140D. He was good at conveying the information. The reading is the most tedious part

Prof Campo is a fantastic lecturer and very well versed in Islamic studies. His lectures are jam packed with info that you use for online posts and assignments. Readings are extensive but very interesting. He is very helpful as well. Texts needed are extensive and reading is mandatory.

Campo is a great professor. Had no prior knowledge about or interest in Islam, barely did any of the readings, and ended up with an A+. He's very friendly and approachable - talking to him at office hours will definitely help. Overall great class.

A LOT of Reading...wants you to do well and grades very easy. Multiple choice is hard on the exams, but other than that, his tests are not hard at all.

most boring class I've taken at UCSB. His lectures are totally worthless and he is NOT a good lecturer by any means. Reads off his slides, which are basically just definitions that one could look up in the textbook. Did I mention lecture was really boring? Section was too. I'd take the class with a different professor.

I really liked this class, along with the professor. Midterm and Final where easy multiple choice. Final had writing and matching too. One 8-10 page paper, that was really annoying to write, but at least there is just one. I think its fairly easy to get a good grade in this class.

Pretty easy class as long as you do well on the paper. Going to class helps you stay on track but is only helpful if you actually listen. Textbook is only good for looking up definitions, but other then that it is kinda useless. Tests are easy if you study and pay attention. The paper is kinda annoying, but not to bad. Easy B+, possible A.

I hated this class it was really boring, even though I had it 2 times a day I never went to class. he puts me to sleep all the time. they don't have review sessions. you have to identify pictures that he talks about for a few seconds on midterm and final. ALOT of reading. the material was interesting but the professor didn't teach it well.

He's very objective when it comes to teaching religion which was really nice. No one religion was glorified or put down. His lectures are pretty mundane though. There's one 8-10 page paper on a book, not too hard. Midterm was derived mostly from lecture, a little from readings. Good class if you want to learn the gist of various religions.

Campo knows his stuff on Islam. I loved going to class and loved the readings. I would just recommend working out any issues via e-mail. He took back his word when it came down to me making up an assignment even though I spoke with him before my absence. He also changed the syllabus around and it caused us all a great deal of stress toward the end.

He's a good lecturer who tries to make the subject substantial in content while still accessible to newbies. I learned about a lot of things about Islam in South Asia that I had never heard of before... and I'm Indian. He cares about his students and is pretty approachable.

Great class! And really interesting! Campo is a super nice man, and is really willing to help. Only one paper, & if you pick a good book (i did kite runner & its amazing) then the paper is easy to write. tests are easy, multiple choice. reading from textbook isnt necessary, only the reading from the course reader is, which is interesting anyway.

Campo is a very nice man, but not the best teacher. He knows a lot but is a pretty terrible lecturer. I dreaded going to class... he grades hard... I spent hours writing the papers and got B-. THe final paper is ridiculous. boring class although I did learn! Tons of reading! The material is interesting just not the best teacher!

if you don't do the work then you can't expect to pass his class. but he really cares about his students, not just the religious studies majors. he does assign more work than is possible, but most teachers do. if you go to class and do some of the reading then you should be fine.

The number of assignments he assigns is ridiculously overwhelming. He notices students who don't come to class and takes their absences into account when grading. Avoid if possible.
