Comment:
I took ANTH 1102 with Professor Van Horne in the Spring 2020 semester and while I did receive an A, I wouldn't recommend the class for anyone who doesn't want to put their 100% into the class. The class is very lecture heavy and he only gives 3 tests. During our semester, COVID-19 made the class much easier and he made 2 of the tests open note.

There are only 3 tests for the whole course. No attendance, homework, or quizzes to cushion your grade. I wouldn't recommend this class for first-year students like I was. I also wouldn't recommend it if you're not a great note-taker. The teaching style didn't really help me learn at all. He was kinda funny but that's pretty much it.

The material is interesting and the lectures were engaging, but the grading was rough. There were only three tests and they each cover a lot of information. You have to really put in the effort on each test in order to get an A because one bad test grade and you are stuck with a B or C. As long as you are okay with not making an A I recommend him.

He is a good professor, but the only grades are 3 tests. That's it. And the tests were pretty difficult.

Attendance is not mandatory but you need to know the material for the tests. There are only 3 tests in the course so you NEED to study and complete the readings. He is very straight forward with his lectures and reviews whats to be expected on the tests. Overall, he's a good professor.

There are only 3 grades in the whole class. No homework, no quizzes, no way to practice your knowledge. You have to study your notes for the past month and a half which is a bit hard. The lectures are very interesting & Professor Van Horne is very knowledgeable but its hard to study for the tests. Good class & professor but horrible grading system.

I loved his lectures and that the readings were online. Don't like that he only grades based on 3 tests. The tests were 30 questions so when you get 4 wrong you already have a B. He reviews the test with us, would recommend recording him because he talks very fast. He doesn't use D2L. Attendance is non-mandatory but you have to go to class to pass.

Prof. was very clear about the whole semester. The whole class is based on 3 test. I failed one (the second test is the hardest test) and ended up failing the entire class. I wouldn't take him unless you're ready to read and actually are interested in anthropology. He tells you what's going to be on the test, but some of it doesn't even help.

I'm a psych major and took this for gen ed, and I absolutely loved it! He's a good lecturer and has clear expectations for the class. It's a LOT of information, but tests don't go into minute details. He also brings skulls and models to class so you can see differences between species, which are really cool to see!

Dr. Van Horne is to the point, punctual, and an effective teacher. He is knowledgeable and doesn't rely on power points to do the teaching. Def need to take good notes since exams are based on lectures. No textbook, no attendance (you need to go for notes), 3 exams make up grade. Easy, but still need to study hard.

His class is lecture heavy but he does so in a way that it's interesting. He has a very detailed syllabus with everything dated and planned out. Provides links for all the readings (no textbook). The class is non-mandatory in that he doesn't take attendance. It's all on you whether you want to go and learn the material or not. Only three exams.

Very interesting class and a very reasonable professor. 3 test, all pretty easy. He literally tells you exactly what's going to be on the test. Excellent professor, I would definitely take him again. He is a really nice and caring guy.

He is a great professor and really knows his stuff. He lectures on fascinating topics. He is funny, but take this class seriously. There are only three grades. Those are all the tests, so make sure to pay attention and study. The textbook is online, so you don't have to worry about buying one. Make sure to print the pages, it really helps.

There are only three exams and they are no more than 35 questions each so you have to know the material. If you simply go to class and take notes, you will pass. Don't take if you're gonna skip! Awesome lectures so class is enjoyable and he usually ends class early anyway

Professor Van Horne Is An Awesome Professor. He's One Of The Best Professors I've Taken Since I've Been In College. His Class Is Very Straight Forward. Go To Class Everyday, Take Notes, Read & You Will Definitely Get An "A". No Gimmicks. He's Awesome.

Not a terrible professor, but could be a lot better. Very straight forward class. 3 tests, no final, no other grades. Lectures rarely go the full class time, but there is a lot of information on each test. Write down everything, and read online readings. 2nd test is the hardest. Study study study!

Van Horne is wonderful. Great lectures but you must be there to hear them. Works with students and regularly lets class out early. Doesn't seek to waste his students time. Class before test is review in which he flips through the book and tells you exactly what you need to read. Tests are multiple choice/one essay. All you need to do it listen.

Van Horne is hands down my favorite professor at KSU. You can tell he's very passionate about what he does and he portrays that in class. Lectures are old school, on a projector, but I enjoyed his teaching style. No book needed but you have to read articles. Holds a review the class before the test which helps a lot.
