Prof. Howell is really a character! She is a good teacher who cares about her students. Can be unorganized at times/ tends to cancel class pretty often. Her FYS course is not difficult but assignments can be confusing because she doesn't give clear instructions. Good professor, great personality.

Comment:

Dr. Howell is great as a Russian professor. She does set homework every night which can sometimes be a challenge but it's usually doable. She is very patient and will do all she can to help you learn and she's also very accessible for help with general things beyond just the Russian language. She's always happy to help you out.

Professor Howell has been my favorite professor at UR so far. She's super nice and really cares about you succeeding. Idk why I took Russian, but I haven't regretted it at all because of her. 100% would recommend.

Dr. Howell is my absolute favorite professor at UR. She cares more about making sure her students learn the material than establishing clear grades so she's flexible about grades as long as you're making a clear effort to learn the material. She does everything she can to meet each student's individual learning styles/needs and she's also hilarious

Professor Howell is an amazing professor and person. She has a great sense of humor and her lectures are filled with necessary information, but also interesting and funny personal anecdotes from her time in the Soviet Union. She was a very fair, and easy grader. Take home midterm, final group project, and 4-5 short response papers on readings.

Super passionate about a lot of topics and her enthusiasm rubs off on you. Excellent at facilitating discussions by moving them in directions that stretch how you perceive things. Very reasonable teacher and grader. Even though I'm not pursuing a degree in anything Russia-related I'm considering taking another one of her classes just because.

Prof Howell is awesome. Due dates are honestly suggestions not mandatory. I am an athlete, so that was clutch. Lots of reading and writing but it's an FYS. Probably the easist FYS that ive heard about

BY far the most wonderful professor imaginable. She genuinely cares about all her students in what she calls "our little Russian family" and will ensure that you not only do well in her class but also have the time of your life. A genuinely brilliant intellectual and a wonderfully warm and empathetic person who you can truly look up to as a mentor.

I took several classes of hers over 15 years ago. I still remember when she would pepper me with questions in Russian while Dr. Bonfiglio would do the same in German. I grew to love her classes, and I still enjoy learning about the langauge and culture. Her love of the culture is inspiring, and one that, for me, will continue on in life.

Obsessed with Russia, which sometimes makes the class interesting and sometimes not. Usually, the class is boring, however, she is a nice person and great fun to hang out with. Sometimes unorganized. Easy history requirement. DO NOT take russian literature with her, u'll be asleep every class.

Easy way to fullfill history requirement. She is very unorganized in the way she teaches, jumping from place to place all the time. She doesn't teach like a teacher, it seems like she is obsessed with Russia and is just telling us what she read about it and the few times she visited.

Yvonne is an awesome professor. I have had 7 classes with her, and she just gets better with time. Very helpful, and incredibly funny. Great discussions in class, especially those with nothing to do with Russian language. Will provide lots of sketchy information about Russian culture/smuggling

I took Russian out of spite for the German profs, and LOVED it. Yvonne was so much fun -- really made learning a treat!
