Comment:
Ernie is a very kind person, but in terms of academics, he is VERY demanding. Don't expect to get many good comments from him--he does NOT appreciate almost all opinions that are different from his own, refusing to acknowledge the existence of different interpretations. He also has little multicultural background.

Comment:
Ernie is very clear and definitely knows how to organize each class. His philosophy courses are very inspirational and thought-provoking. Also, he recommends individual meeting after class, so students can go over papers/academic advising/campus life with him. Singular. Knowledgable.

Comment:
Ernie is my advisor in Div I, and he's a really decent guy. Though he's a tough grader assigning SO MUCH reading and papers, he always challenges and inspires his students, devoting himself to help them out. His studies are mainly concentrated in Western philosophy, so he welcomes multicultural perspectives. I plan to take his course next semester.

Comment:
A very nice guy, though I have to admit I was often intimidated to approach him because he picks arguments apart. He's quite brilliant, really, and his office hours were probably the best part of taking his class. Extensive feedback on papers, illuminating discussions, helpful lectures. His lectures are so thorough that you could skim the reading..

Ernie is a great guy, extremely nice, and goes out of his way to help his students out. He's one of the most approachable faculty members at Hampshire. Be aware, though, that he will challenge you. Also, you must attend to class to get an eval.

Ernie -- such a nice guy. Really. So approachable. He will even invite you to his house for dinner. But beware, he will pick apart your argument if you don't back it up. I found him to be a very precise, picky grader. However, he's always happy to go over papers if you need help. I recommend doing so!

uh, yeah definitely going to challenge you. He will make you defend your argument to the core. His voice level rises and falls often (involuntarily it seems)... beware.

Ernie rules, and will even invite you to his house for supper. He can indeed be combative during discussions (though I've never known him to forcefully impose his own ideas on students)- but this is a welcome change from 5,000 digressions being made by mostly unqualified speakers. Sweet material, singular (excitable) man. Say yes.

Even though I'm a 5-college student I felt very welcome in this class. Ernie is clear that he will not take bs, so hand in his papers or don't get an eval. Read the syllabus! If you just do the work and take his comments to heart you'll do well.
