Comment:
Overall, I'm glad I took this course bc I learned a lot about a subject I was unfamiliar with. That being said, Prof Ozyegin was one of the most frustrating professors. She went on irrelevant, circular, and repetitive tangents every class. I got most out of student lectures. Her exams were very tough & covered a lot of material with few questions.

Straight up DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASS BY HER. She explains nothing on her syllabus yet expects so much detail in her assignments. Her grading criteria honestly probably just depends on her mood which is so frustrating. She goes on tangents and never lets you leave on time. She spends hours on irrelevant things and then no time on what you need to know

Comment:
This class is a small, upper-level seminar, but we did almost no discussion. Prof Ozyegin talked all class, every class. And, there were an absurd number of assignments, with two long papers, 7 5-page papers, and other assignments thrown in. The material is interesting, but not worth the crazy amount of work and super boring class time.

Comment:
Although the subject material in this class was super interesting, prof ozyegin made it almost not worth it. The class is almost entirely student taught, and on days when she lectured, we didn't cover any relevant material. When she lectures, get ready for her to speak for all of class with no breaks. The readings were great, the teaching was not.

Don't take this class. Prof. O seems so fun and quirky, but the class has absurd readings, is almost entirely student taught, and has exams that do not test the material discussed. 5 days before the Final and she still will not give the study guide and spent the 20 minutes showing us pictures of her grandkids. Avoid!!

Gul is a wonderful person. I love her, but her class is unnecessarily difficult. Tons of boring readings. Most classes are other students giving presentations anyways so she really doesn't do much in terms of teaching.

Professor Ozyegin is a nice person but not a great professor. The class is made up of student-run lectures. She often goes on tangents that aren't that relevant. She is obsessed with her husband and brings him up a lot even though he is of no relevance to the class content. Hard grader for no reason. Don't take this class!!

Professor O seems like a nice lady, but she clearly doesn't understand that a seminar should be led by student discussion since she lectures the entire class period. She assigns multiple readings for each class, but she is really bad at time management and you will never cover every topic assigned. Almost weekly 4-5 page essays. Need to participate

Complete title is Comparative Sociology of Muslim Communities- a missing fact that would have prepared for all the readings (everyday)-all were extremely interesting. I don't think I said 2 words in class (but I should have) yet she gave me a B in the course. She's nice, eccentric, brilliant but hard to understand and a luddite. bad @ bboard

I thought Gul was amazingly knowledgeable about her class. However, her tests were very hard and the class included A LOT of reading. However, if you work for the grade, you will get the grade you desire.

I love this woman!! She is so sweet and the material is very engaging. The tests are easy is you do all the reading and class is a lot of fun if you enjoy discussion.. My only criticism is that she is terrible at sticking to the syllabus schedule...expect to get through about half of it. TAKE THIS CLASS!

Professor Ozyegin is very passionate about the subject matter. It is a lot of work, but interesting and thought provoking. She is very helpful and really pushes you in a positive way. You read for every class, but it's not too much. You do take a lot of time out of class to finish all the work, but the class offers a new perspective on many issues.

Expectations are clearly defined in the syllabus from day one, with that being said: there are a lot of readings, which you may or may not get to in class (depending on the flow of discussion). As discussion IS encouraged and expected, attendance is required and expect your grade to accordingly reflect. Professor is always available to help.

Gul is the bomb. I had her a couple semesters ago for freshman seminar. She loves her students, and is very understanding when approached. She cares a LOT about the subject, and is very knoledgweable. She gives a lot of reading, but her articles are usually interesting and provide a new perspective.

So I've had to explain this to a few people, but I think it describes her well: She's not a great teacher (you have to force the discussions, 'cause she'd rather lecture), she has absolutely no social graces (I felt embarrassed for her all the time), but she is really nice, and, if you get into the material, the class can be fun.

She is by far the worst prof I've ever had, and I'm a junior. I'm a Soc major, with no Soc class ever under a B, and I got a C+ for no apparent reason. She doesn't speak English well and for this or another reason doesn't answer questions well. She never taught any actual material, and we only looked at 2 countries. She frustrated me soo much!!
