office hours are the best. no one really goes but he explains things much better 1 on 1 than in a class. lectures can be boring but if you grasp the main concepts and ask questions when they arise - shouldn't be too bad! assignments are graded tough though! but he gives out in depth answer keys to really break down the concepts.

In the beginning I thought he was kind of dry to listen to and he talks slowly, but I grew to like him I think he's not bad, a pretty nice guy. It's just that he doesn't have lecture slides so his style may not be for everyone.

The best teacher I have had thus far. If you dont understand something in lecture, he will go over the tricky material again the following class and wont move on until everyone understands. Engaging and makes class worth going to. You can take online quizzes as many times as youd like before the deadline, and his assignments and tests are simple.

Gunnar is an AMAZING prof. Very approachable and gives great feedback, posts extremely clear and concise lecture slides, and always gives enthusiastic and engaging lectures. His endearingly awkward humour is also a plus. If you're taking linguistics at UBC, you have to take one of his classes!

Gunnar is a great prof! To be fair, his assignments are marked pretty tough and the exams certainly aren't easy - he makes you really work hard for an A. That being said, he's super helpful if you ask him and he is really great at explaining concepts in a clear way! Study hard and you will do well in this class!

He shows interest and knows what he is talking about and can relay the information clearly. The homework assignments are challenging but are made for making the test A LOT easier. He goes over examples and requirements specifically for the hw in lectures. The textbook is more for examples and definitions (at least for me).

He's very kind during the lectures but he expects you know your basics. The assignments can be really tough. He likes to remind you that you're pure bred linguistic students as he has a clear line through history to the founder of linguistics.

Hansson's class was one of my favourite classes, ever. He's very helpful during his office hours. Moreover, he's willing to stay back to help his students after class time. , I was a bit intimidated to approach him, but you'll soon realize what a kind, and intelligent professor he is! :) I got an A, but I worked hard for it! :) Keep up!

Gunnar might be my favourite professor ever. Phonology is a super hard thing and Gunnar makes it a lot more bearable and easier. His explanations might be long-winded, but they make everything crystal clear. The textbook though.. is another story. Don't skip office hours - they are MAGICAL. You will be enlightened.

Took 200 with him last year. Best linguistics prof at UBC, as always. Clear, concise, and well organized lectures and slides, very helpful and friendly during office hours, and definitely fair. Not the easiest nor shortest exams/homework, but it challenges you to actually use the concepts in class. Bonus: has an awkward but cute sense of humour.

Intelligent, knowledgeable & understanding. Hands down the nicest prof in the Ling department, & the only prof I've ever written a review for on this site. Assignments are hard, but the work put into them pays off. My only critique is that he always hands things back late, but it doesn't matter much in the end since he pushes due dates accordingly.

Gunnar (as everyone calls him that) was one of most detail-oriented, thorough and organized professors I've ever had. All these qualities are evident through lecture but especially on his written explanations in homework assignments and answer keys. He allows group interaction during office hours. He even tries to learn your name. Thanks Gunnar!

Gunnar is the best prof that I have ever had. His course was extremely well planned out, with the goal of student success. Exams were fair, and fun, assignments were hard and long, but rewarding, and helped me to understand the material more thoroughly. Extremely helpful and kind, Gunnar was approachable, and willing to engage with students.

He cares very much about his students and do everything he can to help everyone. Easy to approach and try to memorize everyone's name. Very clear in the lecture although the handouts and assignments are impossible to finish, too much to handle every week. Need to read two textbooks throughly several times. Make sure you understand all assignments.
