While most lectures were taken by guest lecturers (great experience and great class set up) Joe was always present in the learning and would give good "filling in" lectures. Exams were tough but fair, always removed questions if unfair. Good prof overall and really awesome class, made me decide to be an SLP

I didn't want to be harsh, but Joe is possibly my least favourite prof at UBC. He doesn't care to help students, he barely ever even lectures, and our TA pretty much taught the whole class (good thing, because she was actually nice and useful) I would never take a class with him again. This class is hard enough as it is, and he made it worse.

Incredibly disorganized class, prof. did not even give many of the lectures creating much confusion as what was necessary to engage with in order to succeed in the course.

Seemed to be consensus with some of us that: textbook's not useful, his lecture-style is energetic/upbeat, would say ok but he threatened to fail a group presenting cuz they were 'too slow' to upload on his laptop when clearly the person before them was taking forever :S, he used iClicker for attendance but often "lost" the marks, unclear syllabus

He's a nice guy overall, but most of the lectures were not taught by him resulting in confusion on what we had to focus on for the tests (2 midterms and 1 final). A lot of the test questions are broad and vague, with no clear outline beforehand what we had to study. Some of the lectures done by guest speakers were impossible to stay awake in.

Really jovial, nice guy. Lots of guest lectures in this class, which was a bit disappointing because I really enjoyed his. He's totally understanding and will help you if you ask and offer feedback. First midterm was easy, second one was brutal - don't be fooled. Exam questions could be tough but generally fair.

Terrible class; lectures were very disorganized and Prof Stemberger only taught about 3 lectures. Midterms were ridiculous, as the marking criteria didn't seem to follow any specific guidelines. Would not take again.

I hated this class. It was so disorganized. I don't even think Joseph enjoys teaching because he only taught 3 times the entire semester. The rest of the time were guest lecturers from SLPs & Audiologists. SO much overlap on material. No communication between guest lecturers but also horrible communication between himself & students. Never again.

Changed the format from previous years. 2015 Winter session many guest lectures , no online tests- just in class exams 2 midterms & final with the format: short answer multiple choice fill the blank. Class average for second midterm very low. Final cumulative and does not provide feedback on what to study for & had group essay & use iclickers

Helps out if you have any questions. Expected to know some past concepts from 200-300 level classes. He won't go too much into review but connects past ideas to current curriculum. Assignments take a couple of hours (as expected of 400 level courses). As with any class, put in the work & you'll do fine. Chill prof, had him for LING 447B as well.

Joseph only gave a handful of lectures while different guest lecturers gave lectures most of the time. Not a bad course but I found it somewhat boring unless if you're into Linguistics and speechhearing disorders. The online exams are moderately difficult but still possible to do well on. The final project was super easy.

Always willing to hear feedback. It was mostly the guest lecturers who taught us, Joe only lectured for 4 classes. 3 midterms (online, openbook) and a final project. Probably a GPA booster.

material is interesting but his method of delivery is poor. tons of notes that only makes sense when he's present. impossible to study for final exam. assignments were VERY time consuming. his exam was HORRIFIC!! for some reason the average of the class ended up to be 80% since he does scale up.

Content of the course was pretty interesting, but assignments long and difficult. Final exam was brutal; most people were writing until the bitter end.

Very intelligent, and interested in the subject matter. He had interesting things to say, but sometimes focussed too much on phonetics instead of phonology. His assignments were extremely difficult and long, but they were still possible to do well on.

ridiculously hard assignments. i've never struggled so hard for answers in my life. could be because i took it during the summer. but his homework and exams were so hard he scaled us all up like ten percent. everyone was so bummed after the exams. a nice guy, a good teacher, just way too hard. hopefully he's fine during the regular year.
