LOVED this course. Professor Carstens is awesome. Great material, awesome professor. Yes, he is insistent that the papers you write are written at the level expected of a college student. No big deal unless you have poor writing skills.

Comment:

I took CIV 201 online and even though the work load was light, his grading and feedback were tough. He seemed very sarcastic and sassy when he graded my exams and seemed hard to approach for help. Doesn't have a lot of assignments either so getting bad grades really hurt you. He graded so hard on grammar, more like a strict english professor.

At the very first day of class I e-mailed Prof. Carstens and asked him to explain in a more detailed way the format of his exams. I have never received such a satisfying answer during my whole college experience. I believe he is a great professor and I strongly disagree with the last two comments!

His grading is poor in my opinion. He grades quite harshly, it only gets worse as the semester progresses. He grades writing assignments like an English professor teaching an English course. I emailed him asking for help and he referred me to a handout with common writing errors. If I wanted an English course I'd take one. Ruined the course for me

Very unsatisfied with him. I took him online & every time I emailed to get help, he was always sarcastic. He told us to read a novel within the first week of the semester, then we didn't even use it until the end of the semester. He refuses to use updated technology & is so unorganized. It took him over a month to grade a one page essay.

BEST Civ teacher you could have. I took it online, expecting to struggle, and breezed through the course. He is very helpful if you email him or go to his office, and never makes you feel dumb for asking. He is genuinely sweet man who cares about his students.

Carstens is a good teacher. Tends to go on tangents. But releases study guide to all tests. All test sectional. Will get out of class what you put in. Would definately take for 202

Dr Carstens is the best college professor I've ever had! He made a subject I couldn't have cared less about fun. I learned a lot. People who commented him missing lots of class, the man was battling cancer!! He's an amazing teacher and his CIV class was the most worthwhile class I took at Murray State University.

Dr. Carstens is the reason I'm still at Murray State. He always made learning the material come before getting the grade. If you participate in class and put forth noticeable effort, he will grade you accordingly. Not to mention he tells great jokes and buys you pizza! Best teacher I've had!

Great guy, but a bit scatterbrained. Most of the time his lectures weren't in any way connected to our readings. Most of his tests and quizes are true and false and were sometimes quite tricky. But, he's a nice guy and was very personable with students. He got to know us all in the class and even bought us pizza. He also canceled class often!

Dr. Carstens is an okay teacher, though he missed a lot of class. As a person, he actually has an pretty well known reputation among other professors and some students as conducting himself unethically, especially with fem students. He likes to come on to them or use them for personal gain. I've nearly been badly hurt by his behavior. Be careful.

Dr. Carstens is a wonderful teacher! He mainly gives quizes (which are very easy if you look over the material) and his tests aren't hard either. He's willing to help you if you need him too! Very good teacher!

dr. carstens is a really good man. i have a lot of respect for him. he is extremely knowledgeable and brings his dog to class. you cant beat that! a descent amount of studying is required but he is really worth taking.

ok, so if you're in his class you'll get free pizza, true. He's pretty clear in lecture. Don't leave true/false or multiple choice questions blank on his tests! He doesn't care about students, just himself, but he wants you to get a good grade so it reflects well on him.
