Comment:
An extremely rude, intimidating, insulting person who thinks he's the best, and he isn't. Doesn't help students, doesn't know how to make assignments, is extremely confusing and cannot explain work, just wants to insult people. Wants to give out low marks on purpose. Strange unexplained marking that gives very low grades and not a pleasant person.

Rants on and on in the class. Extremely rude, intimidating, condescending, and insulting. Picks favourites and acts ill-mannered with others students. Said 'bye' to him one day and his response was 'okay?' Your response to a student saying bye to you is a questioning 'okay?'? Unfair marker. Assignments make ZERO sense and are unclear on purpose.

Comment:
Worst professor ever encountered. Extremely rude, arrogant, demeaning. Picks favourites and does not have basic manners. Also dirty and ruins course. Wrong marker, purposely gives low grades if student is not his favourite. Nothing more needs to be said except that good people don't deserve to face this unqualified person.

I believe that Steven's is a tough but fair marker. He is willing to help outside of class, but you must take intiative. He is very knowledgeable about all the subjects he teaches (and I have had 4 classes with him) and if you work hard you will receive a fair mark. I think.his lectures are a little long but always interestig and often funny.

Read the reviews and make your judgement. If you have had him and did well, then you will again. If you have an opinion or did poorly before then you will again. Dr. Stevens almost failed me twice and I just got accepted to an MA in English for next year. Laurence loves Laurence and his own ideas.

I took Modern & Contemporary Poetry with him last year. Terrible experience. Arrogant, patronizing, and rude prof with little willingness to help students outside of class. Dismissive and rude to students both in front of their peers and in private.

I took Modern and Contemporary Poetry with him. It wasn't my favorite class, and I often had to force myself to go. He does have a way of making students feel small and stupid.

To the person who said that Steven was an awful prof because he gave you a bad mark, I suggest perhaps you were a bad student or writer, as I myself received an 89 in ENGL 2005. I found Dr. Steven engaging, thought-provoking, fair and highly attentive to the needs of his students.

This is the absolute worse prof I've had. I dread going to his class and it doesn't matter how well I do my work, it's always under a 60. GOODLUCK!! He seems to focus his attention on a couple students and the rest just don't meet his standard of "intelligence". Never taking a course with him again.

Worse prof by far! I wasted a great deal of time in this class. He rarely is will to help you and does not think a undergrad is anywhere near knowledgable to receive high grades. BE PREPARED TO DO BAD! High 50s/low 60s are as good as you can do!

Very smart, but is far more concerned about himself than about his graduate students. He was my advisor for a year and never had time to meet, to talk or to clarify and then was mad that he had never been consulted. Again smart, but self involved, and for focused on himself and his reputation.

Comment:
Dr. Steven is generally tough but fair, and he's an engaging presence in the classroom. His course was well-organized. Essays were returned quickly, and feedback was detailed. Some problems: vague instructions, unrealistic requirements, and difficulty keeping class discussion focused on the subject at hand. Otherwise, quite good.

laurence loves lawrence, what a surprise. he obviously knows a lot about lawrence, and his enthusiasm comes through in lessons, though a bit disorganized. but he has some major issues explaining assignments. one gets the impression that he is deliberately vague sometimes so he can punish you for not doing as he secretly intended. overall, decent.

Overall, good: knowledgeable, well-read, well-organized, and effective. But he is definitely patronizing and can be rude. Not open to discussion except on his terms. Will often dismiss students outright or reframe their points in his words to suit the points he wishes to make instead.

He is very vague with what he expects from essays and presentations, which causes low marks from the groups that go first. He is good getting back to you if you have questions, but still isn't always clear.

I never used to care for him; I found him arrogant and condescending, always putting someone on the spot and making us feel bad for not looking a word up. Now I think that, although he's a tough marker, he's very clear about his reasons for why he marked a paper so, which ultimately helps you improve. Funny and engaging.

I think he is a nice guy and a good Professor. All the bad comments must mean bad grades or a falling out of some kind. I recommend his classes.
