Wish I had read previous comments before taking class. If you have no music experience, do NOT take this class. Guest speakers are very intersting but he assigns lots of work, difficult project with little direction and impossible listening tests. Then he tries to make up for it with tons of extra credit that working adults don't have time for!

The best thing to do in this class was to ignore the lecture and read the textbook, because the prof often gave confusing and conflicting information from outdated class materials which often had the previous school year's calendar on them. He would wait until the night before the exam to prepare the exam and this often led to an unbalanced exam.

Comment:
Take this class if you have experience in music. Otherwise, it's pretty rough. Lots of music terminology and history on the tests. Listening tests where he plays a song and you have to write down title, composer, and genre. Barkheymer likes to bust out stuff on the piano as he lectures. Just highlight along in the book as he talked.

Not a big fan of barkhymer. Wanted everyone to understand all aspects of music. Failed for missing more than three classes, even though I had an A. His IS class starts at 8 am what does he expect, music at 8am? He is easy, just go to class, and act like you care. Talk to him about his clarinet. Overall advice. Avoid if possible!
