He would get very off topic from our assigned readings, would lecture for the entire class. I liked the short stories, but class was pretty boring. His paper prompts were really vague which was very frustrating when receiving feedback on the paper. I did well, but I heard my classmates got B's in the class and were unhappy.

This professor is very knowledgeable and I enjoyed this class a lot. The only homework is to read and the lectures in class reflected themes from the readings. The papers were the only graded assignments and they reflected the readings as well. Chill, but solid class.

Attendance is 20% of your grade. Just go to class. There is heavy reading but it's not graded. 2 Essays and 2 tests. Tests are in-class essays. He makes lectures entertaining, interactive, and interesting so you won't feel like dying. He has a lot of passion for what he is talking about and is very knowledgeable. Very easy A.

Chiang is a very knowledgeable professor. This course is very very very lecture heavy. Chiang tries to make the course content interesting and there are some pretty good reads this semester. In class we had the opportunity to discuss some great literature, but more often than not we would not get to engage in meaningful lecture discussions.

Awesome professor. Most of the class was based on discussion. We had readings every class and then would discuss them. There were three papers, a final paper, participation, and attendance. He never forced us to speak during discussion, which was a huge bonus for me. The papers are hard, though, and based on rhetoric (which is hard imo)

A brilliant guy, that much is evident. However, he can be broad and vague at times, and he is a very tough grader. See him during office hours and you should be fine

Professor Mark Chiang was awesome! Really knowledgeable and great class. I learned a LOT and really, for the first time in a while, I enjoyed a literature class. Mostly because it pertained to Asian American identity. He is also great with feedback on papers and is very detailed.

This class was challenging, but worth it. He challenged the class readings and played Devil's advocate and made the class think outside of Western ideas. I highly recommend him. It is not an easy class, but if you participate, attend class, read and ask questions. A guaranteed A in class.

I really liked Professor Chiang. He's very, very smart and incredibly helpful. I really felt like he cared about individual students. He took his time to explain things in great detail for people lagging behind and still managed to make the class interesting for people familiar with the concepts that were discussed. Great professor!

This professor takes some getting used to. He's not a lecturer and really pushes the class to STUDY the texts. His classes can be boring if you have nothing to contribute to class. But he is extremely helpful when it comes to papers, go to his office hours and he will give you clear feedback and he's very good at asking questions you can address.

Comment:
240 is a Theory class, but you?d never know it. He needs to be more explicit. In other words, he takes the Socratic Method a bit too far; he never answers a question directly, and most of the time he ends up not answering the question at tall. The readings are interesting, but I truly felt as though I didn?t learn anything. There are definitely

Professor Chiang is probably one of the most brilliant professors at UIC. Very helpful, and work load wasn't so bad, as long as you managed your time well. 2 paper, plus a final paper, plus one presentation (not bad at all). Great class, great professor. I highly reccomend anyone to take him.

i liked this class alot. he makes you think and he challenges you to think about questions that are deep and conceptual. he did require for you to write a lot of papers though and to read a lot of books. But as long as you are determined to get an A and ask him for help (go to office hours!!) the class should be fun. Enjoyed it very much.

He is extremely opinionated and condescending. One of the worst teachers at UIC. Avoid a class with him at all costs.
