Comment:

His tests were fairly tough but he explains things very well during lecture. He is very approachable and caring. His lectures can be boring but for the most part it is worth going to class since there are some drawings you will have to know how to draw.

Comment:

One of the best professors at NIU, hands down. His practice tests are very helpful for studying, everything you need to know is on the power points, and he is very flexible. Drops your lowest exam score, and also allows for test makeups. Never had a prof that did both. Dry sense of humor, truly a pleasure to take his class. Highly recommended!

Wonderful man, he just has 9 A.M. class but he is very accredited to what he does. Too bad I can't take human genetics with him next semester.

Comment:

If you have to take genetics at NIU, you better take Johns. Straightforward teaching, material is easy, and he covers everything in detail that you are tested on. Not much book use, but everything he uses comes from the powerpoints. Stress-free lecture. Lab will be an extreme amount of time invested for very few points but not difficult.

Has funny lectures and really, really knows his material. He's laid back and tells you what to study for the exams. Gives lots of practice tests and questions! Drops one of the exams and is really easy to talk to and get help from. Offers one extra credit assignment and its super easy!

Johns lays everything out in a simple manner and lets you know EXACTLY what he wants you to know for exams. Tests are not terrible and he gives extra credit. I didn't crack open my book once. Would definitely recommend taking his class!

Gives you exactly what you need to study for the tests. Short tests and generally very easy. Go to class, his lectures cover everything. He's a little quirky, but I really enjoyed listening to him.

Genetics 308 with Dr. Johns was a great course. He was very straight forward with his lectures and exams and was friendly. The lab was beyond tedious. This is a course where if you work hard and stay organized you should be able to be successful.

First off, I was in that class with the ridiculously long test. He pretty much took questions made by students and put them all together without reading anything. AWFUL. Ended up getting a C. But he was just charged with battery so have fun with this guy.

Tests were unfairly long and difficult (70 convoluted multiple choice questions plus 3+ very detailed drawings in a 50-minute testing period after showing up 10 minutes late, for example). I studied for literally days on end for his exams and didn't earn a decent grade on one. Seemed to not know the subject matter. Rude to students. Don't take this

"The Dude" to a T. Most of the grade comes down to how well you do on his quizzes and they are pretty straightforward for the most part. As long as you study and go to class you'll be fine. The lab component is incredibly time consuming w/ two labs taking all semester, but as long as you put in the time you will pass. I really enjoyed this class!

Like the other guys said, he definitely is The Dude from Big Lebowski. Laid back but interesting lectures. Seemed approachable for questions/help. I missed a lot of lectures and just studied his powerpoints and study guides to get As on the exams. Don't buy the book. Didn't open it even once.

The quizzes were considered as exams. There were 6 quizzes and the final. You get one hour to take the quiz and 2 hours for the final. Don't expect him to give you any extra time. All the quizzes and exams are written. Especially the final is really lengthy I couldn't even finish half of it. Probably ended up failing it. The lab totally sucks...

Dr. Johns is a very cool teacher a month into the semester. He makes class interesting and has a good sense of humor. What really makes class the most interesting is how much he looks like Jeff Bridges from the Big Lebowski.
