Discussion based. 2 Essays on readings, 1 Presentation that you lead on the assigned chapters of a novel. Pop quizzes on Melville's book. Final Exam short answers (was structured weirdly and didn't like the questions) and 2 short essays.

Probably one of my most favorite professors that I have taken at George Mason. He knows so much! Only 2 papers plus final exam which includes 2 essays. Pop quizzes on one major book. Discussion heavy. Make your voice heard. Read the books! Pay attention.

Lathbury is a tough grader. However, this is because he really cares about the topics he teaches and wants you to care too. If he sees that you put effort into the class, he will reward you. It easy to get into the subjects he discusses because his passion makes you want to listen. Not to mention his rowdy sense of humor is always nice.

Lathbury is a great professor, but get ready to work for the grade. He doesn't hand them out, but if you show up and do the reading, you should be okay. He loves the literature that he teaches so don't try to play him. Otherwise, great professor.

Hilarious, passionate about the material. So, an overall enjoyable class but he's definitely not an easy grader, if that's what you're looking for. I never got lower than an 'A' on a paper before taking his class and his quizzes were pretty tough.

Although he is a tough grader; do not be fooled, it will merely confuse you instead of drive you to improve. The main problem: he is extremely unclear. His syllabus, assignments, and grading policy all leave room for questions. Any questions you ask him will give you vague answers. Even the writing center is often confused. Effort plays no role.

This man is by far the worst Professor ever. He gives assignments and leaves you to your own devices. The work is never clear, and he grades based upon what he thinks you made. He does not count for any effort out of class. He makes you write 4 papers, they are super long, and he is not clear on the basis of the subject. 70+ year old, tenure prude

TAKE LATHBURY!!! He's a tough grader, but you will learn so much. He's a tough grader, but his lectures are fascinating. Definitely one of the best profs at GMU.

He grades really tough. The pop quizzes are very detailed, I did better when I read Sparknotes though. He doesn't grade based on participation, you get extra credit for that which is good. There is a lot of reading, but not as much as I've had in other English classes. Just read the texts and use Sparknotes.

Clearly likes to call on people who seem to be drifting off. He is excited to teach and very passionate but Would not recommend taking him if you are not an English major as he is a very tough grader. Gives pop quizzes and grades like it's his job to make you fail the class. kind of standoff ish and rude if you give a wrong answer. Not a fun class

Hilarious professor in his prime! Lathbury picks interesting, provocative books and stories, and the informal, discussion-style class setup is refreshing. There is A LOT of reading, and the occasional pop quiz. Also, papers are graded rigorously and the tests can be tricky. But if you love literature and want to learn from a master, take Lathbury!

The amount of reading was a bit excessive. Expect to spend 2 hours reading prior to each class. He grades essays harshly. I did enjoy class discussions.

Great professor. He has a hilarious sense of humor, which is fantastic in a class. Does give quizzes that tend to be difficult. One quiz- didn't read at all, spark notes'd it and passed...another quiz- read the book and failed. Grading can be harsh, but it is helpful. Often calls on students for input. I definitely recommend.

I came into Lathbury's course after transferring to GMU from a community college. The minimum effort level for papers there did not prepare me for his harsh grading. He chooses engaging books, and his informal discussion class structure is cool. Don't get behind on the reading, and spend time developing your papers. Speak intelligently in class.

You'll get what you give out of this class. Do the reading on time, participate in class, and put effort into the papers. One of the best, most rewarding English classes I've taken so far.

Professor is tough, but fair. Willing to work with you if you need it. Be prepared to spend a lot of time on homework and reading. Calls on students often for input. Do not take him if you are not a serious English student.

Very nice guy! makes the class interesting, However his quizzes don't do a good job of quizzing ur understanding of the text. It's always hit or miss. 4example some days i would diligently read & understand the text and fail the quiz & other days i would go on cliff notes and do great. Also he's very harsh on grading papers.

Discussion was fun/informative. As English is subjectively graded, one may take issue with the marks received. I honestly tried my hardest, but Lathbury didn't like me so I received an A- as a result. Entertaining professor, questionable grader.

Teacher with a good sense of humor. Always eager to clarify something if you have a question. He loves class discussions, will call on all of the students for input a lot. Grades papers critically, but I think appropriately.
