I feel like I didn't like syntax before but she helped me understand it better and I've started to like it now. Assignments may be hard but in the end they are manageable and she really knows her stuff.

Rose-Marie's LING 300 was by far the best educational experience I've had at UBC. Her lectures are thorough, and she takes the time to make sure everyone understands the material, while balancing efficient use of time for exercises and questions. You'll leave feeling like you've learned A LOT, because you have.

Rose-Marie takes the time to print out lecture notes to give students every class and her lectures are so helpful. She takes the time to draw out all the steps of the tree structures and is willing to review and explain things clearly and repetitively.

This class is funny because I didn't think that I knew what I was doing half the time and I still ended up doing well. I think she really knows her stuff, and it was certainly a step up from the previous prof for 200. She helps you actually understand how to do things. The Wiki project got better over the years if you're wondering.

Rose-Marie is a brilliant syntactician and a very caring teacher, you can really tell she cares about her students' success. Keeping up during lectures can be difficult as she tends to go fast, but if you see her at office hours she's very patient and thorough. Be sure to keep up on the readings and have questions ready if you want to succeed.

Prof was very good. The textbook is hard to understand but she prepares thorough lecture notes every class, which explain the concepts well. I thought everything (tests, homework) were fair. I chose the take-home exam and thought it was less stressful than an in-class exam. She often gives hints about homework/tests so I think attendance is crucial

hilarious of workload. Wiki page is definitely a nightmare for this course, wasted a few lectures just to ask a technician to teach us using wiki. take home final exam took at least 30 hours to complete with 20+ pages hand-written answers. BUT hard work pays off, easy A! Textbook is your real prof for this course!

I cannot even tell you how bad this prof is. "Exam guide" sent out less than 24 hours before the midterm, txtbk unavailable even after reading break, deadlines constantly changed and unclear because she falls behind, doesn't show up for her office hours, doesn't answer emails, doesn't mark assignments in time to study for midterm. She is useless!!

By far the most ridiculously run course ever. Wastes lectures by complaining about how students don't understand or spends class time on Wikipedia tutorials. Quoted a UBC policy on how students are paying tuition fees to "learn how to learn", which in her words is students teaching themselves course material. Do not take ANY class with her.

There were many issues with the course. First, what the heck was the points of the wikipedia project? Our topic had little to do with syntax and this project was worth 50% of our grade. Second, there was NO feedback on problem sets as only 15 were even marked by the time our take home final was due. Got a high mark, but was incredibly frustating.

You know the scene at the end of the Killing Joke? Like when the Joker finally manages to make Batman laugh? Well it was like that. The course was hilarious not because it was funny, but because of how absurdly ridiculous and non-nonsensical it was. I didn't learn a thing yet I got an A. Half of the lectures were on 'how to edit a Wikipedia page'.

To do well in this class require 3 things: -Do the assignments-they take a long time, but it help tremendously for midterm -Prepare well for the midterm -Do small amount of the class project daily: it will build up. Rose-Marie is a fair marker. You put in the work, you will get a good grade.

No respect for her students. Course "contract" in the syllabus that you are made to sign. What? Wastes lecture time with what she calls "erroneous impressions" which were valid student complaints about her course. I have never seen someone belittle her class in such a big way and I will be filing a complaint against her with UBC HR.

Makes the class unnecessarily difficult. Wastes class time complaining how students don't understand. Wikipedia project was unrealistic. And the take home final took students an average of 32 hours to complete. Doesn't reply to emails. Doesn't acknowledge that her teaching style isn't working. Better like teaching yourself everything.

Unrealistic expectations. Expects students to do a really time confusing Wikipedia project on top of problem sets and readings. Wastes lecture time on Wikipedia and is unclear and not really helpful. Horrible with e-mail replying and expects you to go see her face to face. Take home final takes at least 30 hours to complete.

Seriously avoid this prof if you can. I know she teaches some upper-level morphology as well. Honestly the course administration was the biggest problem. She was incredibly disorganized and marked WAY too hard. My mark was scaled up astronomically (as was everyone else's), because we all failed the midterms, even though the last one was take-home.

Seriously dont take this class. The whole thing was a nightmare. She doesnt hold set office hours but claimed you could email her to set up an appointment. Problem is she doesnt reply to emails! Assignments dont recieve any feedback. Exams were at a graduate level even though most students only had an intro ling course prior.

DO NOT take this with Rose-Marie. She usually teaches graduate courses, and expects undergrads understanding of material to be at a graduate level. Her 60% class project was a nightmare, and her midterms were beyond awful. The projects were graded leniently, so the class did well in the end, but the road there was a disaster.

love this lady. course was interesting, confusing at times...but the midterms (3) were only worth 30% of the whole course. complete everything else and you'll get full marks. and she scales. whaaaat. hopefully I don't speak too soon and get a bad grade!

Very high expectations. Vague requirements and brutal assignments. Caters to advanced graduate students and leaves undergrads in the dust. Doesn't always post readings, so students have to track them down themselves.
