Just a really lovely person and very helpful. I think she could stand to explain how to use the data entry programs and eliciting equipment more, but otherwise, she's a wonderful professor.

Comment:
Matthewson is an awful professor. She insists on using "modern" teaching methods which means you read the book before class and then when you get there she does a few clicker quizzes (on things that werent in the reading) then doesn't explain anything because she assumes we've taught the material to ourselves somehow before class. TALKS SO FAST TOO

Lisa is an amazing prof, she's always willing to learn from the students and draw in interesting lessons from life. Her lectures are clear and she is open to any questions and encourages discussion. Even though the topics can be dry sometimes (IPA), but she makes is amazing anyways. Class participation is mandatory with click quizzes, no finals.

Lisa is really helpful and funny, and most importantly, she totally knows what she is talking about. Only thing is she sometime speaks too quick, but does her best in keeping a good tempo and she encourages students to ask her if something is not clear.

Lisa was a fun, enthusiastic prof, and the TAs for this section were good too. The class was not too difficult at all. She is a fast speaker, and has a bit of an accent, but she made an effort to slow down lectures, and posted powerpoints online. Textbook can be gotten for very cheap too.

Everyone thought the class would be a GPA booster, meaning it would be easy to get an A in the class, but the midterm was so long and time consuming and we were only given 50 minutes to do it, so the avg was low 60s and there was no scaling. If you want to do well in the class, get perfect on the weekly quizzes and study hard for the midterm!

Comment:
Take it only if you have genuine interest in linguistics. Do not be fooled by the simple concepts this course introduces. The bi-weekly assignments were very time-consuming and hard. Midterm was unbelievable. The final poster was supposed to boost our grades but the average was 75%. Not much of a boost considering how hard the midterm was.

She makes too many errors on assignments and quizzes and tries to "cover up" when she doesn't know the answer to questions. The midterm (specified prior to midterm that it was going to be difficult) and some of the assignments were freaking hard. Although I must commend her for her enthusiasm during lectures.

She was very nice and able to teach new material very well to non-linguistics majors. There were a couple of times when she made the class uncomfortable with something faux-pas that she said, but it all worked out. She's a great teacher and was always helpful with out-of-class questions.
