Comment:
Ness gives fairly interesting lectures and is more generous than others with quizzes and tests. His tests are multiple choice (which is nice IMO) with some short answers and essay questions, but he doesn't grade essays too hard. As long as you show up for lectures and do at least some of the assigned reading, you'll do well.

He's a nice guy and tries his best to make dry material exciting! And that's really hard to do. Also most labs he'll come in with some kind of animal (guinea pig, rat, etc...) and a fun time is had by all. Also though, as a freshman taking a bio class, they try to squash you to weed out who is committed and who isn't, even if you aren't premed

Comment:
Professor Ness is a sweet guy. But his class is extremely challenging. There's not a clear trajectory of learning objectives - it's hard to be sure what exactly you're learning about and why. The tests seem to include many things that weren't discussed in lectures. Very confusing class. I enjoyed him as a person, a lot, but not as a teacher.

In Biology 112, the test averages fell between 60%-80% and required a lot of preparation. Be prepared for pop quizzes and always read over the chapter the night before in order to do well. Best tip, read along with the study guides that are provided on Canvas and use them for test preparation.

Dr. Ness is a very organized teacher who provides study guides that are very helpful for test preparation. In order to do well in the class, reading is essential. I appreciated his expertise on the subject and appreciated his help outside of class as well.

Comment:
I really enjoyed Dr. Ness's class. It was not easy, and the test averages were somewhere in the 60-70% range. However, he is a great professor and teacher - just a very hard grader and he writes very hard tests. This is, of course, a fault, but as a professor and person Ness is quite enjoyable.

An intelligent individual, but a terrible professor. His grading is extremely unfair and seems to impose his infinite knowledge in a judgmental way. I would take a different course, or if it is required, take it somewhere else.

Ness is by far the laziest professor I have ever met in my entire life. He did not grade anything until the week before the quarter ended. When I confronted him about mistakes in grading my tests by showing him the book he said that he would change my scores but never did. His lack of effort shows that he does not really care about his position.

While a nice guy and a good teacher, his feedback was terrible. He was also very lazy and took forever to grade papers and tests. When students approached him to correct mistakes or for feedback he would say he would do it but never did.

Ness is a professor who knows his stuff and more. His tests are very dense, so study hard. He offers extra-credit and curves grades, and drops quizzes. Overall he's a very fair and knowledgeable professor.

The most interesting teacher of all three quarters of Biological Foundations, but occasionally disorganized and can take a long time to grade tests. Exams are very difficult and require a lot of studying, but he curves the tests and offers extra credit for those who are willing to put forth the effort to get a good grade.
