Comment:
I took this class just for an upper division elective hoping for an easy A. The class consists of 3 tests and 1 capstone project. The tests are fairly straight forward. Personally, I didn't use the book at all. Attending Lecture is very important if you want to do well on the exams.I would definitely recommend taking him!

No textbook. Must attend class to understand& take own notes. If you don't understand, pretty much screwed. 2 books that are stories that will be part of test and projects. Took this class to boost GPA, instead hurt it. Projects are hard. No rubric and confusing directions. Would not recommend taking this class. Did not like his teaching and set up

It's simple. If you're interested in the subject, take the class and you will find it highly informative and not difficult. If you are not particularly interested in the subject you will likely find it very boring and do poorly. The textbook is small and used only in part, most of the material is from lecture.

The most boring class I have ever taken. Every class is a long powerpoint lecture. Only 3 exams and 1 project for the whole class. I took good notes and studied for every exam and did horrible. This guy needs to change his routine and teaching style because most of the claasmates i talked to felt the same way. HORRIBLE!

Comment:
Terribly dull lectures, content for the most part is absolutely pointless/boring. Having to read every book was tedious but the only enjoyable part about this class. He gets off on tangents where he seems lost and talks to himself. I would look elsewhere for your 3 credits.

Professor Arreola is very knowledgeable on Urban Geography, if you show up to his class and take good notes you will do well in the class. He doesn't have homework just three tests and a capstone project at the end(NO final). I highly recommend him!

Took the class to fulfill a requirement. Although I wasn't too excited going into the class, I really enjoyed Prof. Arreola since he is extremely knowledgeable and friendly. He is great at keeping your attention and his enthusiasm shines through. Definitely recommend everyone takes a class with him.

Dr. Arreola is one of the best cultural geographers in the Geography department. Test are easy, so up and take notes. That is it. People probably do not like him because he doesn't just give out As. This is college, expect to do some work and earn your grades.

Comment:
Geography of Hispanic Americans was one of my favorite classes for the semester. You have to read 3 books and there is a final project, which are very manageable. Students probably don't like Arreola because he expects students to go to class and earn their grade. If you want an A just given to you, go back to high school.

Comment:
The class is not difficult if the student applies him or herself. Arreola is very knowledgeable in his field of study and will check you for ignorant comments or responses. It's sad that many students take classes pertaining to ethnicity and think that will be excused for making biased and misinformed statements.

Professor smart & articulate. However, received final grade & still do not know any grades for any final exam or presentation/paper/group project). Not to complain, just would have liked some feedback. Students must go on one of two field trips to Mexico, one being two nights. Final grade based on group project 50%, midterm 20%, and final exam 30%.

Wow! Negative comments below are quite accurate. One gets the idea that he will grade assignments based on how he feels about you. He calls everyone by their last name and in so doing the tone of his voice belittles you. He indicates that he will give students time to work on group projects, but he does not. Appears to be very self-absorbed. Regret

Crazy man! I think he came from another, scarier dimension. His lectures are boring and WRONG. Thinks everything has to do with Mexico- I learned more about his personal history than about anything we were supposed to be studying. Grades unfairly based on flawed logic. He's also dissrespectful and rude if you correct him. Worst prof I've had!

Simply put, Dr. Arreola is an excellent professor. His interesting lectures, backed by his extensive research, leaves little doubt as to why he's viewed as one of the leading experts on the US/Mexico Border and Hispanic/Latino America. Would recommend to anyone.

He is pompous and self-absorbed and uses outdated material to validate his theories. His tests are poorly written and it is painful to listen to him talk especially in spanglish. You'll pass if you do the readings tho.
