Do not take him. He expects everyone to participate in class - which is great! - except, he wants everyone to state his opinions. If you disagree with him or the textbook he'll make you stop talking. It's horrible. We're 21 year olds, let us express our own thoughts! Also very unhelpful when it comes to what he expects on assignments.

ethical issues: Participate or else he will just pick on you. Very opinionated and goes on tangents. Participating helps grade a lot, gave one 15 page paper and two hard exams, only 2 got over a B. On the plus side, you didn't have to take final if you were satisfied with participation grade.

boring class boring teacher boring readings. i wanted to shoot myself some days i was that bored. quizzes every class on the reading, calls u out if u didnt read. you would think its a comm class but its more like history. avoid.

He is a nice man but he is SO boring. His lectures are confusing because he does not make it clear what he is talking about, so for two and a half hours feels like 10 hrs. Myths and Symbols of American Character - Confusing and pointless material, I think its the content of the class that is horrible more than the prof. himself.

This guy is very good at detecting bullsh*t. this posed a problem for me. you have to participate if you want any chance of a decent grade and even then, i guess this goes back to the bullsh*t, you need to reference the reading. makes you think, work, and talk, which is what a teacher is supposed to do, but i found it to be a pain in the ass.

The workload is ok, but the readings are so redundant and uninteresting that they could put an insomniac on blow to sleep. He is a bit of a condescending and tough grader, but mostly because he is very ambiguous in his assignment explanations. You will do well if you sit in the front, brown-nose him, and just agree with everything he says. AVOID

First, his name is James Capo, not John. I liked the class very much. Interesting material; he's knowledgeable about it. The readings and assignments are tough, but hey, I'm not sure why he's disliked so much. He's a tough grader, but fair. Very nice man, too.

I took this class b/c it was one of the only senior values classes left open. Dry material. The books are SO repetitious. Honestly, participate and see him in his office hours before you do ANY assignments. He's not very clear when it comes to explaining things either. Keep asking questions.The class was a pain, but it's survivable.

can be an ass. don't worry about papers or books you have to read-skim through them. His grading is based on whether he likes you or not, POINT BLANK. Do the reading or do what you can when it comes to the text, but your discussion in class is what counts. TRUST ME 90% of the time you can **** and go on to totally different topics and be OK.
