Comment:
Dr. Jay was a staple at UW Madison for 35 years who retired in Dec. 2015. Through 3 courses with him (MSE 350, ME 314, ME 342) you quickly realize he is here to teach, and probably teaches the most students per year than any other faculty member. He hand grades all the tests individually and really enjoys his students. Sad to see him go.

This was a great class. Dr. Jay has been there a long time. I am glad I got to take a class with him and he helped me even though I didn't do to hot on an exam. Can be dry and boring discussion for some. I sit up front and nothing too bad.

Dr. Jay is a great professor who has been here a long time. He really knows his stuff. He was always willing to work with students and also has the longest office hours I have ever seen.

Boring and useless. Such a cool course, such a shame that he's teaching it. Read the book, find people to study with, no need to go to lecture ever.

Love this guy. Horribly dry and boring lecture but he loves when you come to office hours and hang out with him. He is a little condescending if you ask questions in lectures. Knows his stuff though. One of my favorite professors at UW.

Horribly dry and hard to listen to. Not helpful at all because he doesn't show up to office hours. Don't sit in the back because you won't be able to hear his mumbling over his ancient projector's fan. That being said, read/skim the "textbook" and know the labs and the exam is easy.

I don't know where the hate is coming from. He is a really smart guy who has served his time since the 80's. His class is boring but it's not that hard and he's awesome. If you go into office hours he's just happy that you're there to hang out with him. Do the practice exams and the assignments and you'll be fine.3

i'll give you the warning about how there is only 1 exam for his class and mine was bull. read the book and get ready for dumb questions. example- in this 15th century picture of a bell foundry who's the apprentice in the picture. That has nothing to do with the class. he barely goes over welding in the exam which is half the class

Poor professor, not helpful at all. He gets mad if you send him emails. I once asked him a question, he sighed and went, hopeless. Exams are fine if you study the previous exams though.

One of the worst profs I've ever had. Completely uninterested and uninteresting. Lectures are useless. Homework is what correlates to tests, but you're left to your own devices to figure that out from scratch. Awful prof, awful class.

Does a terrible job presenting information. You will learn everything you need to know from discussion. Lectures will put you to sleep. However he the curve is extremely forgiving. It would be hard to get less than a B in this class.

Dr. Jay wrote a fantastic textbook in the early nineties. His classes are really off topic and you learn a lot about kitchen pots and knives and random old vases and material samples he owns. If you want to get an A, skip class and read through his textbook. Do the homework(even though i'm sure you'll find the answers), they're basically the exams

Love this guy. Honestly not sure if he's depressed or mildly autistic because of his communication skills. Lectures were a bit odd because he likes to talk about things that might be interesting but you really don't need to know. Do your homework, don't cheat it and you'll probably get higher than a B.

Good guy who means well, lecture is somewhat boring but he knows what he's talking about and the exams are just like the homework so I don't understand why people complain about his teaching.

Hard to stay awake in class, but he is definitely very knowledgeable on the subject. He uses the same book every year so its easy to get homework answers and if you go to class and study his book its not that difficult. Tests are EXACTLY like the homework and practice tests. Not a tough class

Dr. Jay is an awesome guy. If you go into his office hours he is actually very nice and just wants students to talk with sometimes. Ask him and he will help you with any problem you have on his homework. Easy A if you read the course manual before the tests!

Terrible, he uses the same old textbook he made before I was born and just rambles in class. basically you memorize the practice tests the night before and get by. Didnt learn a single thing but got by with a "B".
