I was skeptical of this class at first, she does not use D2L or any online things, she is hard to email because she just doesn't like electronics that much I guess, but the class was easy to pass as long as you read and are open to listen to her. She has a lot to say and is very respectful of student needs, would recommend.

Dr. Tess is clearly passionate about the subject matter and brings a unique outlook and personal experience to her lectures. You have to read 1 short book a week and there are 3 papers & 3-4 presentations that make up most of your grade. She doesn't clearly outline expectations/feedback, but if you are a decent writer & talk in class you'll be fine

Comment:
I think some of Dr. Tess' reviews are rather unfair. Yes, she has an accent, but so does everyone. She teaches three-hour lectures exclusively, so you should know what you are getting into. It's 3 papers, 3 presentations, but they are graded very generously. She was nominated for the Nobel Prize in literature and is a world-famous playwright.

Dr. Tess is such an interesting person. She provides a very unique perspective to her lectures and she is clearly very passionate about what she teaches. You're only graded on 3 papers and 3 presentations, but she grades pretty fairly. While her lectures are interesting, sometimes it's hard to focus for the entire 3-hour class period.

Tess is an amazing person - do your research on her and read her books!! She definitely lectures at you 98% of the time and she has a heavy accent making it REALLY hard to pay attention, however, what she has to say is important. Read the books/plays and PARTICIPATE. The more you contribute, the better grade she is going to give you on papers!

She's super passionate about what she teaches but she's almost too passionate sometimes. You'll have no clue what she's going on about sometimes even if you do read the books. Lectures are super long and you will never leave early. Presentations are super hard to do because she isn't specific on what she wants until you actually present.

Tess wants her students to be able to discuss their beliefs in a group setting and tries very hard to facilitate conversation. She is very understanding and is interested in the growth of her students

Dr. Tess is really funny and great to listen too. However, do not expect to leave class early. Ever. I was surprised at how much she can talk! She obviously loves what she does and it shows in her teaching. She makes her expectations clear and if you have any questions she answers them well.

Dr. Tess was amazing. Her lectures get long (mine also went until 8:45 pm...), but I never had any problem with that considering how interesting the lectures were & how knowledgable she is about the topic. Only 3-4 papers and a couple group presentations, as long you participate & as long as it's obvious that you put in effort you will do well.

Pretty good professor, no tests at all. There is one paper per month and a few group presentations. This class is assigned 1-2 books a week and sometimes it is hard to keep up with that. Very easy grader on the papers and presentations. Easy class to pass if you show up. All the books echoed the same thing.

Dr. Tess has become one of my favorite professors at Eau Claire. She is not always clear on what she wants from us, but if you ask for clarity or visit her in her office, she is more than willing to explain further and clarify. Her knowledge and experience within this topic truly make the class enriching for anyone taking it. I would take it again!

I was in the three hour lecture of African Women and Literature. Like any three hour Thursday night class, it got to be long. Although she is vague about her expectations with papers and presentations, she gives grades that are very fair. As long as you take notes in class, you will do well on assignments.

Comment:
Tess was a very interesting professor with many stories to tell and a great analysis of works that we covered in class. She has a tendency to be long-winded and sometimes goes on unnecessary tangents. She can be theatrical in her teaching but it comes with the territory of being a playwright. The requirements for papers are not always clear.
