Comment:

Denhouter is a different breed. I had him for 112b and I have mixed feelings about him. He wants things done HIS way. He wants you to draw the way HE wants you to. There was not a lot of room for individualism. However, I did many new drawing techniques and made some awesome friends in his class.

Comment:

Mr. Denhouter was a very patient and talented teacher who I had the opportunity to learn from. He always explained things thoroughly and ensured that he walked around the class to discuss ideas with everyone. I was grateful for his lessons because it allowed me broaden my perceptions and ideas. I still use many of his painting tips to this day.

Professor Denhouter is very smart. However, he conveys information weirdly. He walks around to help but I find that he can be very boring in how he shares his opinions. One day he will hate my design but the next day he likes it. He also told me to copy his drawing because I couldn't get the posture correct. Lost points for doing what he said to do

Comment:

Is not open to creativity and individuality. Projects are to be what he wants, not what you want. Will tell you to change something then later tell you it's wrong. Not encouraging at all. Would recommend taking with a different instructor if you have the chance.

Comment:

The same test had to be postponed 4 times because of poor management of class time. Disrespect for student supply budget. Forgets what he told you then will tell you the things about the work he asked u to change are wrong. Does not give specific parameters for projects but if you do not guess correctly you can always be wrong.

In 2D design, he wanted you to make what he wanted, not what you wanted. Even if you fulfilled all of the requirements of the general project, if you didn't do exactly what he wanted, he will dock you for it. I got B's on every project (89% to be exact) and no matter what I did, I could't get an A.

Tho the class is of general information to improve drawings he made the class interesting. He is very educated in his work and cares about your piece if you care for it. If you are trying your best to improve he considers that when grading. Very helpful. I'm taking his figure drawing class next. Very excited to work with him again.

Very Unique man. I still find myself quoting some of his outrageous one liners. You'll enjoy listening to this man. I wasn't always in class for the whole class, he never complained. When i was there, he was quick to ask if i needed any help or if i had any questions about my painting. Take him if you have the chance, he's extremely talented.

Comment:

Denhouter told us to "draw what isn't there," or he wouldn't give us a B, but if we strayed too much, he'd give you a C anyway. Although I worked hard on all of my projects and attended every class, he gave me a B because "an A is for exceptional work, and you just didn't provide that." Thanks a lot, guy. He's not recommended for non-art majors.

John's a nice guy. He's open to different styles of painting and doesn't make you paint his way. He's also very helpful and shows examples to each student that could personally be beneficial to them. As for the critiques--they aren't forced, they're really short compared to other classes, and it's usually him talking.

I had him for drawing and painting. I love Denhouter-he's a genuine person who really cares about those who really care about their art. Very knowledgable-his book collection is outstanding and he is always ready to help provide relevant references to students.

One time he asked me if I was a drawing major and when I said no, he responded with, "Ok, just making sure." I know I'm not exceptional at drawing, but maybe that can be attributed to the fact that he was my only drawing teacher up to that point.
