Get ready to study because he tests you on weeks worth of notes, but makes you define 10 words. Ridiculous waste of time to study about 40-50 terms but only get tested on 10 You will read The New Jim Crow and waste half of the class siting in groups discussingit.

His notes are very hard to follow to say the least. His hand writing doesnt help considering he jumps around while he writes. He has 3 tests throughout the year and are all on his notes. The tests are on a large range on notes, but he asks you to define 10 words and write 3 short answer responses. Very hard test grader, must be very specific!

You cant understand what he's writing on the board, and then he will put on tests subjects that he has barely covered. Also grades papers in a ridiculous fashion.

This is a great class! Although there's lots of reading and the class is lecture-heavy, you learn a lot and the topic is interesting! Some of the films we watched were insightful and entertaining and our field trip to Solano Prison was a great experience. As long as you care about the topic, you're set.

Professor Ely is a hard teacher, but I really enjoyed his class. He's very knowledgeable about social problems and is super helpful when asking questions. His tests are kind of hard though. He responds to emails fast and he is willing to make arrangements on homework and make-up exams if you let him know beforehand!

Ive had this teacher for many of my soc classes and i absolutely love him. He's very engaging in his lectures and grabs your attention by using examples of key terms that currently apply to today's society. His tours and trips are also very exciting and he's very into what he does.

Comment:
A little dry, with the bulk of the class pure lecture format. The book is pretty boring, but he doesn't ever test you on it. The tests are really easy if you just study everything on his study guide. You never need to know anything else. The final paper seems impressive, but end up easy.

He's really easy for seminar, he is really into the whole small group thing which we all know turns into "so how was your weekend". He is also a really easy grader, with minimal writing assignments, He's basically the slackers dream!
