Comment:
Dr. Rice is a kind man, but his class consists of 3 exams and a 10% assignment, which makes the class overly stressful. I mostly taught myself through the textbook, which you must read if you want to pass. I wouldn't say he is awful, but he doesn't spend enough time in class going over what you need to know. Be prepared to put in lots of work!

In lectures he would just go over practice problems; didnt explicitly teach concepts in class. If you took acct before should be a breeze. The hardest part is reading/learning all the concepts on your own. Content isn't necessarily hard, just a lot. Would've gotten a better grade if I put more time into it; had a lot on my plate. Weed out class.

He's actually very nice and willing to help whenever you need it. Yes, his lectures are boring and will make you fall asleep, but if you put in the effort to study, you will be fine. I wouldn't take him again, but if he's your only choice, it's not the end of the world.

I don't recommend taking this class with Rice. The lectures were hard to follow and extremely boring. The test are difficult and there are 3 that count for 90% of your grade. He seems like a nice guy, but does not explain the material well for an intro level accounting class.

Definitely not one of my favorites. Seems nice, but very dry and boring. Do not take at 8:30. You will fall asleep. I showed up everyday, paid attention (to the best of my ability), studied, and still didn't do stellar on the tests. When we moved to online classes, I still struggled on the test despite having my textbook right there.

He writes his own textbook for the class and it's confusing and filled with mistakes. There are only 3 tests and 1 project that your whole grade is dependent on. He isn't helpful in office hours and his lectures are all over the place. ACCT1301 is a necessary course for most business majors so TRY your hardest to take it with someone else.

He is a good teacher but his is the hardest section of intro to accounting, try to get any other teacher. Only graded on 3 tests and a small project. Really have to study to pass the tests he makes them difficult. Basically everyone struggles with this class.

Tax is one of those things you either love or you hate. Either way, you will have to work very hard. Rice does not make it fun. The textbook is dense and confusing, investopedia is very helpful for concepts that aren't explained well. The only grades are the tests but they are curved heavily. You won't pass them guessing!

Very boring class. I mean it is hard to make accounting fun, but especially when taken with this guy. 90% of my class fell asleep daily, and no one ever learned anything. Bad class.

This was definitely the most frustrating class I have ever taken. No matter how much I studied, I got the same grade. So yeah prepare to have a crazy amount of workload for tax. As for Rice, I honestly liked his sarcastic humor and he knows what he is talking about. My only complaint is his tests were all multiple choice and way too hard.

Rice is a decent professor. He teaches the material clearly so that you will learn it, but he is very dry and his class is quite boring. Everything is directly from his book so if you read that and pay attention in class it is not too difficult.

This class was extremely difficult for me. I went in for help, and he would only give me the answer or tell me I'm probably dyslexic (I'm not). People that have had an accounting or finance class before seem to do fairly well in this class. I had not, so I have been struggling all semester. He uses his own book which is confusing too.

Teacher was wonderful, very helpful. Always ready to help you understand the content. The tests are hard if you don't pay attention in class. The key to getting an A is to not take it at 8:30 in the morning and actively listen and take notes.

Sticks to the textbook (that he wrote) word-to-word, so studying is easy. Helpful, gives extra practice problems with solutions. Manages to make a dry subject livelier with interesting anecdotes from his professional background (he's also a tax lawyer and a CPA). Easy grader, predictable tests. Don't take if you don't like a strong Southern drawl.

Very difficult class; 3 tests are 90% of the grade, and none are easy. No curve either. The second test almost everyone got C's and D's on, averages all-around. Sometimes Rice seems condescending in class, but is actually very helpful in office hours. His classes are very monotonous though, avoid 8:30's, you WILL fall asleep.

Rice knows his stuff. He does not use a textbook and so there is no safety net to fall back on, but there is no need for a book because lecture notes should suffice and so attendance is a must. Tests are hard but not undo-able. Extremely helpful outside of class and offers lecture notes taken by grad students. Keep up - you'll do fine.

Comment:
There is no textbook which at first seems cool, but will end up being annoying. You MUST take good notes, for they are all you have to study with for the tests. Acct. itself is easy though so the class is doable. Try to take Specht, but if you can't its not the end of the world, an A and understanding acct. is possible with Rice.
