Lectures are little more than purple prose. Thornton needs to cut back on the purple prose to be a good professor (of which he is not).

US South history class. The breadth and depth of his knowledge of US History was impressive. His lectures were really interesting and held my attention for the entire 3 hours (10-15 min. break midway). He didn't assign busywork; there was just a small amount of tests and an essay. Listen + take notes. He's one of my favorite professors so far. :)

Very entertaining and good at lecturing. We were only graded on three things: two exams and an essay. We were given a pool of questions for the exams beforehand. I never read any of the assigned books, one can get a B in the class with little effort if they at least attend. Would recommend.

horrible. DO NOT TAKE this class if you're looking to just fill a requirement, it will be an obscene waste of your time. lectures are incredibly boring, he is rude, and is a difficult grader. "doesn't believe in rubrics" but will grade you on one AFTER you have done the assignment. The worst class I've had to date. Only 3 grades, all difficult.

Terrible, terrible professor. Lectures were disorganized, full of useless information, and usually put me to sleep after 25 minutes. Occasionally would try to start class discussion, but ended up lecturing at each student about how they were wrong and he was right. Every. Single. Time. All in all, this man is the reason I now hate history.

Kevin Thornton is a great professor. His lectures were very interesting and full of rich detail that made history come alive. He has a passion for his sublect area and it translates to his students. I would love to take classes with him in the future. Being a good reader, note-taker, and writer will help you excel in this class.

Thornton is by far my favorite professor and person ever. I had VT Hist with him, and he made me excited to go to class every day. Midterm/Final were take-home, and there was a 10 page paper. As long as you go to class, reading is not necessary. Thornton is amazing, and I want to take every possible class with him in the future. He is so passionate

I took hist 11 and 12 with Thornton. Great professor; very engaging. He really cares about what he's teaching and that makes it incredibly interesting. Only graded on 3 things; 2 exams and a paper, but they're not too hard. Great classes, I would recommend both! He is a great professor.

I hated history up until taking this class, and he made it interesting for me. Three grades the whole semester, he gives questions for the exam out ahead of time, but grades hard. The rubric for the paper (33% of grade) was very vague and he grades that the hardest, so put in the effort. Interesting lecturer, poor grader.

Overall good professor. He is very enthusiastic about History, however lectures are unorganized. Grading is pretty fair, however there are only three grades the entire semester. Textbook is optional - I never used mine and did well. Typical college level lecture class. Pay attention and put the effort in and you will do well.

Obviously very knowledgeable about the subject, but does not know how to relate it to students. Only 3 grades in the class, and we only knew 1 before we took the final. Until the day of the final, our final grades were a matter of guessing.

Kevin Thornton's knowledge of American History is a black hole of random, unimportant historical figures (from Vermont), useless facts (about Vermont) and a collection of recurring themes that are neither relevant nor intelligent. He needs to reevaluate his teaching methods because his class was an enormous waste of time I'll never get back.

Pretty much the worst teacher I have ever had. You wont know your final grade until after all the grades are submitted. He is very lazy, not helpful, and boring. Worst grade I have ever gotten in college, and also the only class I have ever fallen asleep in. Dont go to class because you can just wiki all his terms and get more from that than him
