Only went to two lectures, super easy class. You just need to read the textbook and the tests are easy. She tends to jumble on and on during her lectures but she is super nice and available.

Comment:

Showing up to class is practically useless. Everything you need for the test is in the book and will not be covered in class. Class time is for her to talk about stuff you don't need to know. You're better off skipping class and reading the book than showing up to class.

Very sweet/genuine woman she's super energetic and quirky. However like the others said, she briefly mentions test material in class and expects you to remember everything for the 50 question tests. If you take her, make sure to take lots of notes for tests or cram textbook info. 5 question quiz once a week (easy) and no group assignments.

Comment:

Dr. Semmes is a very sweet and passionate lady. However, she demands too much from her students. If you don't have time to read, you're screwed for this class. Her tests are very hard, and questions come from things she's briefly mentioned in class. She says she is only giving the footnotes of what is in the book and expects us to read 24/7.

Dr. Semmes is a great person and passionate about what she teaches but is terrible at actually teaching it. She expects you to teach yourself the material by reading the textbook what she is supposed to be teaching you in class. She also has specifically said because it's a three hour course we should be spending three hours A DAY studying. HELLO?

Loves what she teaches. 6 tests projected on-screen in class and quizzes. Minimal (3) 'hands-on' activities, attempts to lighten the lecture-heavy class with humor and personal stories but it just seams to drag on. Random attendance. One extra credit assignment. Overall she was a good professor.

Ms. Semmes is clearly very knowledgeable and passionate about music. The class is easy (she gives no homework), but you need to show up to this class to do well because tests come from her lectures and videos she shows in class. However I personally didn't like her test format (on a projection screen), lack of study guides, and cringe-y jokes.

Great professor, funny, engaging, and a fun class. Has hands-on activities, and she's just a great person. Very understanding of her students and their situations. Takes attendance occasionally, but you should go anyways or else you'll do bad on tests, and tests are your whole grade. Highly recommend taking world music with her!

Dr. Semmes wants to make sure everyone succeeds; she really cares about her students. Her lectures are also super fun! She is really happy to be teaching at HSoM & her positive attitude is contagious!

I loved Dr. Semmes class! She really wants participation, but it's not a part of your grade. Very easy grading scale that consists of 7-8 quizzes and a final group project that is super easy! Definitely take her!

Comment:

Semmes really likes participation. She is a passionate professor and really seems to enjoy teaching and her students. In my course there was reading but I got by just studying the ppts for our group discussions. I haven't had a professor like her yet at ASU so enjoy her attitude and goofiness because you probable wont experience it again.

This professor thinks she gives good guidelines for quizzes and projects but once the time comes she gives different directions. Clarity as to what you should do id lost in translation. Also do not take if you speak any other languages. In my class the Spanish speaking students were always put on the spot to translate song lyrics.

Semmes was an interesting and engaging professor. She really knows what she's talking about and is very knowledgeable in your field. Yes she may be quirky but she also makes class interesting and fun. There were five tests and each of them were based on a lot of things we talked about in class so I suggest going to class. Overall she was great.

Though she only cares about you showing up if there is a test that day, her lectures are super interesting. She's very engaging and uses technology as a supplement to your learning well. Reading was always helpful to the tests, though, if you can recall from lectures or take good notes, it might not be necessary for you. An absolute delight!

I absolutely LOVED Dr. Semmes! She's funny, interesting, and passionate about teaching. The work wasn't hard (really, read the text and show up to class and you'll pass with flying colors). She had us do a lot of hands on stuff that made class fun and the final is a group project (which really wasn't too bad). I would take the class over again.
