Comment:

Micheal's reputation isn't unwarranted, he does not take any bs from his students. If you don't come to class prepared he will call you out on it in front of everyone. That said, he is an amazing mentor, he gives excellent feedback and genuinely wants his students to succeed, he just isn't afraid to push in order for them to get there.

He is terrifying, brutally honest. To be frank, if you slack and do not do your work in his class, he will not appreciate your existence. Which is valid, he puts a lot of time and effort into you and you should do the same. Do your work, exist loudly, do not be shy. His methods of terror allow you to grow very well, I find. Dr. Lesy shaped my experience at Hampshire and helped guide my work. I often felt intimidated by him, but his performative teaching style is balanced by his eagerness to help. He will take your work very seriously and really only expects that you do the same. Great readings assigned. Take at least one class with him.

Comment:

The class "Sex and Death in America" with Lesy is a high dive into a pool of unknown depth, exciting, invigorating, and could quite possibly result in your death. Dont let that dissuade you though, if you want to be challenged this is the course for you. Lesy will show you the tools to needed delve into the insane alternate histories of the 1920s.

Lesy teaches journalism by using examples from other peoplehimself and via inspirational one-liners. This makes it hard to take notes, but easy to learn how to be a courageous writer and confident listener in this world. He not only teaches you how to craft a narrative, but how to confront and write about the world in new, enlightening ways.

I had a wonderful time in Lesy's class. It was challenging at times, but all great classes should be. I was surprised at the level of compassion and empathy I felt from Lesy during our one on one talks. I was expecting him to be much more cruel as he is often described by students. He will challenge you and you will grow, just do your best.

If you want to put in hard, good work take a Lesy class. If you put in the effort and show your interest/intelligence Lesy will provide you with great critiques and honesty. If you dont work hard and it shows, well, good luck. He does not waste his time. He can be overly harsh but dont pass up the opportunity. A brilliant man!

I am very proud to have been a member of this class. Michael is commited to all his students, and gives honest useful comments on papers. He has challenged me in ways that other professors never have. But most importantly, he teaches you how to be more alive in the world, and I can't think of a better lesson than that.

I got so much more out of this course than I could ever have fathomed. I have gained real world experience and understanding. This course has an enormous capacity for self-growth if students take advantage of the course and commit oneself fully to it. I took his class 10 years ago. I was such a meek girl then, I was terrified of his commentary on my writing that when I knew I had handed in lazily-written crap, I just didn't go pick it up. But when I put my heart into the work, his commentary was useful and honest and served to boost not only my writing ability but also my confidence.

Lesy makes it clear from the beginning that he is not there to be your friend; he is there to teach you something and make you a better writer, which is exactly what he did for me. This is the only writing workshop class I've ever taken that really forced me to push my abilities. Anyone who disliked the class just can't handle criticism.

I was a student of Lesy's 15 years ago. Sounds like he hasn't changed a bit. I got sucked in, somewhat, at the time, but in retrospect I feel like I got ripped off. I would take his class for entertainment purposes only and believe nothing he says without further investigation.

Lesy considers himself the last of some noble breed of scholar, and the students who surround him are symptoms of its downfall. His teaching method consists of reciting aphorisms, which were the intellectual currency of that beautiful past to which he is our ambassador.

in every feel-good college movie, there's always the one professor who feels the need to justify his own mediocrity by demeaning the aspirations of students. look no further. michael lesy is hampshire's. take a writing class with just about anyone else instead. it IS possible to be a gifted writer while simultaneously encouraging students.

Extremely hard and will kick your butt. But in the end it's worth it. I learned a lot and he was brutally honest about my writing which is good if you can take criticism. By the end you'll love him.
