This is an amazing teacher. He is such a great guy and cares about everyone of his students. I would certainly recommend taking this course with him as a teacher. He is very generous with his grading and will help you out in anyway.

Dr. Coan is an amazing chemistry professor. His lectures are so helpful and sometimes entertaining. The exams are usually based off of the examples he does in class so pay attention. He is so caring and the way he explains the material makes it easy to understand.

Dr. Coan is definitely a great professor! I like how he still uses the blackboard and chalk rather than fully relying on technology (ppts). For me, it makes computations and the topics easier to understand. There are 2 connect homework (that'll help you) and 1 warm-up exercise weekly for this course. Would like to have him again as my chem prof!

He is a really good professor, but you have to come to class. He writes his notes on the chalkboard and doesn't post the material online. His class can be boring, but if you pay attention and understand the material you will get an A. Take his practice quizzes before the test, they will help you.

Dr. Coan is an amazing professor. He uses real world examples when explaining concepts and I find that extremely helpful. As an older student, I truly love that he actually writes on the chalk board. It isn't a "death by powerpoint" class. Awesome professor! I wish I could have him for every chem course!

Really great teacher, slows down note taking by writing all of the notes out along with you. Makes it very nice rather than displaying a lot of info on a slide and making me rush to get everything down. You cant skip class, his in lecture notes are critical to doing well on homework, quizzes, and exams.

I learned so much from his class. He writes all of his notes with you on the chalkboard with you, so he doesn't go to fast. He gives practice exams and lots of practice problems so you can practice. Some of the warm up problems use figures from the text, but you can get by without it (borrow). He is very helpful if you visit his office as well.

Coan is very nice and is willing to help you with any problem. He gives practice exams/quizzes, so they shouldn't be a surprise. His lectures are on a chalkboard, which is very nice for a Chemistry class.

Explains concepts thoroughly and open to answering questions. The book is only required to answer warm up questions. All in-class notes are written on the chalkboard. I highly suggest not skipping class, or you will be completely lost. Very exam and quiz heavy with ALEKS due twice a week. Gives great feedback and is willing to work with you.

Dr. Coan is a great professor! He really cares about his students and wants them to succeed! Attendance for lecture isn't mandatory the tests are purely from lecture so go. As for lab it is MANDATORY, if you do NOT go to lab there is no way to pass because you must have C+ or higher to automatically pass chem. He drops lowest exam and lab grade.

Dr. Coan is a great teacher. He gets to know everyone by name even though it is a lecture hall. HIS PARTIAL CREDIT IS SUPER FORGIVING. Even if you get an answer wrong, he will look through your work and give you as many points as you can. ATTEND CLASS because he writes notes on the chalkboard and you will miss a lot if you don't go.

Dr. Coan can be a little boring if chemistry is not your thing. He takes notes on chalkboard and does not post them online so attendance is important. The information can seem like overload sometimes. Other than that he is very nice and willing to help you in any way possible. Make sure you do the Aleks homework and lecture warmups for easy points.

Comment:
Dr. Coan takes all of his notes on the blackboard, so if you don't like that, I wouldn't recommend taking him. His lectures can be rather boring, but if you go to class, the tests won't have unexpected questions. The homework grading criteria is confusing so make sure you understand how it works. Lab and homework help balance out test/quiz grades.

Overall, easy enough. Labs were very easy and the classes were easy enough. You use aleks weekly, but you only do a few topics. I hate that he writes on the chalkboard. It makes it difficult to see some of his smaller texts. You really just need the online aleks code for the homework. He gives you plenty of ways to study for his tests and quizesses

While he's fine, get ready to sit near the front. He still primarily uses the chalkboard and you'll be taking a lot of notes. If you're anything like me then you'd probably prefer Pavlik, as you can read his slides from anywhere in the room and gives guided notes. Coan is a good professor, but his teaching style didn't work for me.

Paul was really informative with his lectures, but it frequently seemed like he was behind schedule with the material so we skipped the more in depth stuff about certain topics. That just made the class easier though. If you don't attend the lectures then good luck. He gives plenty of partial credit on tests and quizzes.

Lecture is really boring but you have to pay attention and write everything down. If you miss something in lecture, there's no way of finding it because he doesn't have any PowerPoints. He gives lots of partial credit on tests and if you study, it's not so bad

Dr. Coan explains the course material so it can be understood easily and connects it to the real world so I found the class very interesting! He knows all the students names by the end of the semester which is really impressive because he has large lectures. He doesn't take attendance but if you don't go to lectures you probably won't pass.

I took a year and a half off between 111 and 112, but Dr. Coan made getting back in to Chemistry so easy. He doesn't take attendance but the tests are all lecture based, so you might as well show up. He's one of my favorite professors and I would recommend him to anyone! Using the textbook (or not) is up to the student, it's not needed.
