Comment:

I really enjoyed the Fall 2008 Gened 111. Smith clearly outlines how papers are graded, that he ignores grammar and spelling mistakes in favor of whether or not a student knows the material.He is very passionate about what he teaches, and is more than willing to accommodate office hours. He encourages discussion and takes on any opinion.

Comment:

Smith has no back up to the way he grades things, it is completely objective. I would not recommend him to any student looking for a teacher for 111. Even if you do want a challenge, I don't recommend Paul Smith. He grades how he pleases and judges the students when it comes to grading. Do not take his class at all costs

Comment:

Smith is a horrible teacher, he has no idea what he is doing, and you jump around in the book from one thing to another. I learned nothing from this class and it was just a pain in my side with him as a teacher. The way he grades is absolutly horrible, unless you want to suck up to him, you will get a horrible grade.

Worst teacher ever. I hated going to class and the only reason I ever did was in case he happened to give a reading quiz or collect our notes; you can't even follow a word he says and if you miss one of his points then you get marked down at least 2 points. He has no idea what he is talking about whatsoever. A music major should not teach history!

His in class lectures have no use at all in his exams. He rambles on and on with no apparent structure or direction in his teaching. The exams are confusing considering the class does not know what he wants in them. Do not let a music teacher teach history.

I appreciate his class, only because of the way his grading is set up. His exams don't require you to know the material word-for-word, but to understand it. You can easily pass the class an get a good grade on exams without readings. Only thing I don't like is how he branches from topic to topic during lectures.

Seems to know what he's talking about, but he has problems conveying it in a useful manner. His lectures are pointless and don't relate to his exams, and there is no structure to his class whatsoever. Don't let a music major teach a world civilizations class!

Don't take GenEd from Smith! He's a well educated individual, but shows his kowledge through weird tangents that are impossible to follow. Prior to this class I was interested in history, but i slept through most, if not all of his lectures. He's a great musician who was mistakenly placed to teach history. Akward singer as well...

I personally think that he looks like an ugly version of Harry Potter! He is crazy. I have attended every single class and I wish that I just skipped all of them because going to class was POINTLESS. I advise you not to take this class at all... unless you want to die of boredom and confusion. He's PSYCHO!!! AND HE RANDOMLY SINGS. Awkward.

he was a horrible teacher most the time i would fall asleep in class. and you only get graded on like 5 things and 2 are exams 2 are large research papers. then he will make you turn in notes and have pop quizzes on the reading randomly. He would also just talk about china the whole class and or how to try to get and A in his class

He is actually a music major and you can tell. His assignments and lectures are all about opinion and no facts. In the assignments there is no hard rubric, just kind of whether he likes it or not. Everything is essay based and opinionated so if you like that then go for it, but if not then stay away!

In the beginning of the course I thought he was going to be great. But as we went further into the course, he was unclear with what was wanted of his students, he would go off on tangents as if we were supposed to be able to follow. Overall, I would suggest if possible, to NOT take a class from Professor Smith!

Well I usually don't have that hard of a time with teachers but Mr. Smith was an exception. He was so broad on every assignment it is ridiculous. Not to mention you need to force yourself to go to class because the lectures are useless and boring. I basically taught myself the material before every test. Word of advice...avoid this teacher.

Mr. Smith is a strange man. He tries to help if you ask, but he's very hard to please. He grades hard and frusterates everyone in the class. He talks about random crap and is pretty much the worst teacher I've ever had.
