Comment:

As a music major, I took several music history and chorale courses from Dr. Russell. He is intelligent, articulate, well-prepared, thorough and highly professional. Although Dr. Russell is a knowledgable, dedicated conductor, I found him to be a better music history lecturer. Overall, Russell was an important pillar of the USM Music Dept.

Dr. Bob is an absolutely incredible director. He knows so well how to take a conglomerate of people ranging from classical voice majors who want nothing but to sing classical chorale repertoire to jazz performance instrumentalists who are fulfilling an elective credit and build a choir that functions as a group and performs powerfully together.

Comment:

By far the best Choral conductor I've had in over 40 years. Knows many ways to get the best voice and emotion from the singers, and presents interesting activities to help the singers feel the music. Stories of the composer, etc. helped connect. An amazing experience, even for a non-music major who just loves to sing in choirs.

My first impression of this guy was that he was very pompous, and a little stuff-shirt, BUT, he's also very funny, and more than willing to help. TO PASS: READ. TAKE GOOD NOTES IN CLASS. STUDY. LISTEN. Then the class is easy as pie.

Comment:

I took this course in the winter session, so it was pretty intense. Prof. Russell does well to keep it interesting, but it is a lot of work. Even though attendance isn't mandatory, you wont do well if you don't show up. Overall it's not a bad class (especially considering you pretty much have to take it).

Dr. Bob is a fantastic professor. He no doubt loves what he teaches. However, as such- his course is really hard. This is NOT a breeze by class. Dr. Bob does not give specifics when it comes to quizzes/tests, and assigns about a chapter a week. For all you music majors, get your buns in gear for this class so you don't have to take it twice.

Comment:

Russell teaches "Music History" as though economically privileged white European males are the only musicians worth the time of day. Although he makes a disclaimer about the "white maleness" of the class, he doesn't make much of an effort to change that problem. Whenever he happens to mention a woman in music, he dubs it as a new "feminist theme."

An awesome class! A very good professor. Well educated and he knows his material very well.Sophisticated enough to make his points clear and makes class interesting although it can sometimes get broing (what class doesn't?) Study, Ask Questions, and you get an A. Recommended for G Core! check plus!

Sightsinging wise, not so great-not everyone is perfect singers, but a fabulous conductor, and he truly does want students to succeed. HOwever, he needs to have more faith in people when things get hard for them in a class like ear training.
