Comment:

Best teacher I've ever had. He is the reason I'm going into linguistics. SO inspirational. You can really tell he loves what he does. He is always available and ready to help. He does lecture mostly so try to make it to class, but his love for linguistics inspired me to make it my major. I LOVE going to his classes. I've had him for four classes.

Comment:

I loved Professor Rosenthall! He was very clear on each assignment. It was usually taking notes during lecture, maybe one quiz a week, 2 exams (midterm and final), and a linguistic class project. He always had ACTUAL office hours that he was there for. He is not a fan of putting anything online and does not like electronics! Would take again!

Comment:

He is totally against technology is his classroom. He wants the room silent for his very boring lectures. The whole class period is him rambling on about a topic that may or may not be on the test. He never fully answers questions for students because it's "not a topic for this class". However, there is not very much homework at all.

Comment:

Okay. I was not looking forward to this class at all. BUTTTT this ended up becoming my favorite class all semester. We learned so many useful concepts and ideas. Rosenthall is so knowledgeable and really cares about his students. While this class is pretty lecture heavy, they're amazing and super interactive. Would totally recommend!!!

This is a pretty hard class, but Prof Rosenthall is cool and definitely knows what he's talking about. His lectures, though long, are well organized and easy to follow. He also does a really good job of explaining difficult concepts. Take good notes and you'll do fine:)

Sam is a great Professor for every class I have had him for. His lectures can be hard to follow at times because he makes them up as he goes along as he thinks of information. He really does know the material and explains what he is thinking very well. Take notes and ask questions in class about the homework. He is always willing to help you.

Comment:

He lectures at a fast pace, can be difficult to follow along. Goes into almost unnecessary extreme detail, hardly any of it showed up on tests. Exams were frustrating. He is one of the smartest people I've ever known, I hold much respect for him. but be prepared for the intensity of language and the brain.

Comment:

Prof. Rosenthall is a great teacher and makes class fairly enjoyable. Class is very lecture heavy so make sure you pay attention and write everything down even info from the videos. His tests are somewhat different and more difficult than the homework/ notes but he is helpful outside of class if there is confusion. Would take more of his classes.

Attendance is not a requirement for this class but I feel like it should be. If you do not come to class you will not learn the materials necessary to pass. On tests and homework he will often mark things as incorrect and mark "how?" or "why?", so make sure that if you take this course you are able to provide answers to such questions.

He's nice, but his tests have a lot of content that wasn't covered clearly in class. He spends way too much time giving examples he finds interesting and spends less time actually explaining things that we ended up being tested on. I took his class as a gen ed and it ended up being super hard.

Professor Rosenthall did a great job explaining the information in a way that made sense to me. His lectures can be long, but as long as you pay attention and take good notes the class should be extremely easy.

I really loved his class. His lectures were very clear and fascinating (to me). Few quizzes on essential information, a couple worksheets- otherwise its all lecture, the whole class period. He writes down everything important on the board, so you don't even have to be a good note taker to pass! Very knowledgeable/helpful, talk to him after class!

Pretty good teacher but the material can be uninteresting or repetitive. Professor Rosenthall rarely assigns homework but when he does he gives a more than reasonable amount of time to complete regardless of the assignment type. no tests but a few easy quizzes here and there. would take a class of his again!

This class was hard didn't like him the tests were tough , didn't give enough handouts his notes on the whiteboard were all over the place was late on passing back quizzes wouldn't recommend this guy to students, quizzes and exams were hard. Didn't offer extra credit to bring up student's grades

Comment:

Really interesting class, a bit dry at times but he makes the class fun and interesting. Super helpful and will answer any and all questions, even if he has to look them up. Exams aren't that bad and there are a few in class assignments that are super easy. Highly suggested! he is the real MVP!

Comment:

Fantastic teacher. He kept class interesting, was very passionate and knowledgeable about the subject, and was always there to help. Probably the best professor I've had here at Oakland. Highly recommended.

Professor Rosenthall is very intelligent and even funny sometimes. I wasn't interested in the material at first but I really learned a lot and he was very clear in his lectures. Note-taking is easy because he writes everyting on the board. Also, he found an answer to almost every question he was asked throughout the semester.

Professor Rosenthall has good vibes. I like his lectures a lot. He did a couple lectures for my LIN 201 class, too, and they were the best lectures of the semester. He is very intelligent and articulate. I would definitely recommend him.
